SERVPRO Helps Brooklyn Water-Damaged Homes After Disasters

Because there are multiple triggers for water damage in your home or business, Brooklyn property owners are often unable to navigate the full spectrum of cleanup, drying, and repair that a building needs after damage incidents. SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn has a 24/7 response to emergencies, as disasters can strike at any time and leave you needing mitigation and restoration solutions

It is important to react quickly when you discover water damage in Brooklyn residences. Your contact with our administration and dispatch starts qualified water restoration professionals moving to help. This first notice of loss determines the best tools and approaches to mitigate damage.

What Is Mitigation?

As a literal definition, mitigation is an effort to reduce the severity or consequences of an action. When used in context with water damage restoration, mitigation is used early in the recovery arc to prevent the situation from worsening, costlier damage, or the destruction of exposed contents and personal belongings. Mitigation often comes in several forms:

  • Water removal services
  • Bulk material removal
  • Controlled demolition and repairs
  • Content relocation

Among the most direct methods of mitigating water damage effects are extraction and water removal services. Actions taken with pumps and vacuums alleviate the impact on porous materials and make later restoration efforts faster and more thorough.

Expert Drying Services

There are multiple steps to efficient and effective drying processes, but it must be direct and thorough because this is one of the most critical phases of water damage restoration. We are recovery experts, following IICRC guidelines, arriving with industry-leading equipment and cutting-edge tools to help. From drying the surface of materials like drywall to penetrating structural cavities in less-invasive ways, we have the solutions to help.

Several drying tools are necessary to achieve the needed drying goal set by the management operating and overseeing field technicians working in the home. These tools help regulate relative humidity, saturation, and secondary damage from high moisture content. These include:

  • Air Movers - Forcing air across moist surfaces helps with the direct evaporation of wet materials. Using axial and centrifugal air mover units, we can directly address trapped water in flooring and wall systems.
  • Dehumidifiers - Dehumidifiers convert moisture content in an environment into collected water to dispose of it properly. Depending on conditions, the processes to achieve this range from producing condensation within a unit or absorbing moisture.
  • Heaters - Portable heaters are a way to increase the temperature on a surface or throughout an entire workspace. Warmer temperatures help in several ways, such as increasing the capacity for moisture content in the environment for evaporation and dehumidification and amplifying chemical processes by faster molecular movement.

How Do You Know the House is Dry?

Peace of mind is not a guarantee during the restoration process. That is why our SERVPRO team works so diligently after water damage concerns to alleviate concerns and show the progress of our efforts. Water damage to your home can impact materials far beyond the surface layer, so sensors and infrared imagery help track moisture beyond the visible layers.

Experience in Action

A point of pride for our experienced professionals is the level of training we receive to help with disaster relief and cleanup. For water damage threats, we have a roster rounded off by multiple certifications:

  • WRT – Water Restoration
  • CCT – Carpet Cleaning
  • ASD – Structural Drying

Water Damage Repair in Brooklyn Offers a Lasting Solution

3/14/2023 (Permalink)

Damaged tile floor The first step to resolving water damage is calling your local trained professionals at SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn.

Trust SERVPRO for Water Damage Repair in Brooklyn

One of a home’s basic functions is to keep the residents dry. However, unwanted water sometimes gets into the living space when the homeowners least expect it. Water damage repair firms have technicians who respond fast to fix water damage to limit the destruction.

SERVPRO performs water mitigation to stabilize a home and ensure no further damage happens. Water damage repair in Brooklyn homes occurs after water mitigation and is meant to return properties to their pre-damaged state. Our restoration process can involve the following activities:

  • Pulling out damaged flooring and replacing it.
  • Removing water-damaged structural components like drywall.
  • Restoring or replacing the subfloor.
  • Mold remediation.
  • Testing for moisture to confirm that all structures and contents are dry.

Hiring professionals from SERVPRO quickly can save you energy and money. The tools we use help ensure that the affected area dries up quickly. We can use powerful portable pumps to remove the water. Many of the pumps we use are centrifugal pumps. They work by converting rotational energy from a motor to energy to move a particular kind of fluid. They include electric submersible pumps, high-pressure pumps, and self-priming trash pumps.

It is necessary to eliminate moisture from the air to dry a home. Evaporation adds moisture to the air as air movers evaporate it from wet materials into the air. Our SERVPRO team ensures that dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air as quickly as or more rapidly than it is being added. We call this a Balanced Drying System. We can use a closed or open system to dehumidify the air. An open drying system exchanges the moist air inside the building with the drier outside air. A closed system separates the affected area from the outside air and the structure’s unaffected areas.

After cleanup, our SERVPRO technicians can evaluate the stability of your home’s essential parts, like walls. You can therefore avoid living in a compromised structure.

A timely and professional response to water damage can provide peace of mind. Call SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn at (718) 522-4400 for efficient restoration.

Not One, But Two Floors of Water Removal and Cleanup in Brooklyn

Surprise water damage events are overwhelming for homeowners, even more so when the indoor disaster affects not one but two floors.

When SERVPRO technicians arrive to perform water removal at Brooklyn homes, they scope the property to find anywhere the water migrated. In cases where the water spill event encompasses two floors, the cleanup is even more challenging.

Controlled Demolition Tactics

When water affects multiple floors of a home, extraction and thorough drying must occur within the floor joists to prevent costly future issues such as mold, weakening of the building materials, or foul odors. Controlled demolition techniques such as weep holes or removal of sections of sheetrock to increase the amount of airflow work to ensure complete drying of the affected areas.

Professional Drying Techniques

Consumer-grade fans generally can only dry surfaces. The centrifugal air movers blast warm, dry air into the water-affected areas and cause the embedded moisture left behind after water extraction to rise. SERVPRO technicians choose different types of dehumidifying equipment to capture the water vapor and remove it from the area.

Restoration of Upholstered Furnishings

Water from a floor above often winds up in the carpet or upholstered furnishings in the room below. SERVPRO water removal equipment has specialized attachments such as weighted extractor heads that push water out of porous items. To keep home disruption to a minimum, they can dry fabric-covered furniture in place and have the skill to avoid stains on the carpet or residual spotting on the upholstery.

Reconstruction Services Lessen Stress

After completion of the water damage cleanup efforts, SERVPRO technicians give the homeowner a report that serves the dual purpose of assisting in expediting any insurance claims and also details the nature of the repairs necessary to return the home to its preloss condition. They have a general contractor's license #2015353DCA, so they can offer restoration and reconstruction services.

The faster water removal happens, the more opportunity to lessen damage to the home and its contents. Contact SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn at (718) 522-4400 when you need a quick turnaround on cleanup and restoration services to make it "Like it never even happened."

Keeping Customers Informed During Water Damage Recovery in Brooklyn

After a water crisis, our Brooklyn customers contend with a multitude of worries and emotions stemming from the incredibly disruptive event. We have a responsibility not only to assess, plan, and implement structural recovery but also to be responsive and transparent with the property owners we assist. Insurance carriers are essential actors in any disaster restoration scenario. The care and professionalism we take in documenting damage, and explaining our approaches to resolution, protects our customers from unnecessary expense and results in the most successful outcomes.

We Work as Partners, Not Invaders

The aftermath of water damage in your Chicago home is already overwhelming. If the managers and crews who arrive to assist feel more like an invading force than allies, we fail to meet your needs, regardless of our skills and state-of-the-art equipment. No one knows your home better than you. We need your insight, and you and your property benefit from our respectful and comprehensive explanations of the research-based strategies we use.

Speedy Restoration Still Takes Time

One of your questions might be how long SERVPRO needs to complete the water damage recovery. The answer is dependent on several considerations.

  •   Water contamination concerns
  •   The extent of the damage, including migration to unexpected spaces
  •   Damage to fixtures such as carpeting and cabinets
  •   Outdoor conditions
  •   Type of residence (single-family, apartment, loft) and distance from the street

We craft your personalized restoration plan keeping all of these elements and more in mind. For example, a street-level residence allows for the use of truck-mounted water removal equipment, while a penthouse above the ground necessitates the use of gas-powered pumps and backpack extractors.

Thorough Drying Strategies Continue Round the Clock

The equipment configurations SERVPRO employs to dry out fixtures and structures must operate until moisture levels return to normal. Often customers wonder why we float carpets or tent hardwood for warm airflow or negative air pressure for hours at a time. Because the proper balance of humidity, airflow, and temperature is critical to achieving drying goals, we must maintain the effort until the goal is met. We understand the frustration but counter with an easy-to-grasp explanation of the science behind our efforts. Delivered with compassion and a smile, our reasonable response helps explain that brief inconvenience results in the desired results.

SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn pledges to keep you fully informed during the water damage restoration process. Call us at (718) 522-4400 to join forces with our industry-leading disaster recovery team.

Our Experts Explain Addressing Common Issues That Can Lead To Water Damage In Your Brooklyn Property

Addressing Common Problems Leading To Water Damage In Brooklyn

In older houses, water loss can stem from many factors leading to severe damage and inconveniences. In a brownstone, roof leaks, drainage clogs, and the occasional mysterious water are likely to leave varying degrees of water damage. Dealing with the problem and restoring the house to its pre-damaged state requires a combination of the right skills and the use of advanced equipment. For example, without sophisticated equipment such as thermal cameras, investigating a mysterious pool of water can lead to additional damage as contractors tear down wall sections or ceilings trying to locate the source.

Cases of water damage in Brooklyn caused by sewer line problems are not only prevalent but also highly inconveniencing because of the soiling and contamination they cause. The toilet, sink, and shower lines draining into one large pipe that channels the waste into the city sewer lines is a conventional design in most brownstones. A clog in a building’s main sewer line, therefore, readily leads to back up into the lowest opening, whether it is the toilet or bath. Our SERVPRO technicians help clean up the soiled areas and sanitize any contamination. We use professional cleaning agents with antimicrobial and sterilizing properties.

Roof leaks are not only problematic because they happen quickly when some roof parts separate or water seeps into the membrane and insulation, but also because they require dry weather or at least temperatures above freezing for a permanent fix. If the leak is not significant enough to be noticed immediately, it can lead to severe damage to the ceiling and supporting structures. It can also drip along the walls permeating the stone or plaster, prolonging the effects. Using sophisticated moisture detection equipment such as FLIR thermal cameras, our SERVPRO technicians can trace the impact of the water from the ceiling to the walls, efficiently determining the best course of action.

The wooden floors, stairs, and many other surfaces in a brownstone can prolong the effects of water loss because of its absorbent properties. ASD, Applied Structural Drying certification guarantees that our SERVPRO technicians take every step possible to restore the moisture levels in the affected area to normal levels.

Water Removal Actions To Restore Brooklyn Homes

Even with the Upper Bay to the West, Brooklyn residents know that the greater water threat to their homes is the outdated and rusted plumbing inside. If left untreated, the property can be just as damaged from a failing water heater as a severe storm.

Brooklyn water removal often means getting water out of brownstones and other multi-level homes. For SERVPRO restoration teams, that means pulling water from parts of the residence where it normally does not appear, like ceiling tiles, trim, and drywall panels on the upper half of the walls if the leak source is on the second or third floor.

It made for an interesting work site in one home. A pipe rusted out in a third-story bathroom and sent water overnight down into the kitchen. As it flowed, the water-soaked the third-story rugs and wood floors in the hallways and bedrooms. It damaged ceiling panels and soaked one wall completely on the second story before getting into the kitchen, damaging more drywall.

Surprisingly, except for a cheap bookcase and a few books on the third floor, and a toaster oven in the kitchen, no furniture or other personal property was damaged. When the water reached the kitchen, there were only puddles on the linoleum.

After turning off the water and replacing the short section of pipe, SERVPRO technicians started removal operations with extraction wands. Fortunately, since the team arrived within a couple of hours after the owner woke up to the problem, they were able to draw water out of the rugs and from between the floorboards. Technicians dried the boards using air movers to direct a warm airflow over the surface without splitting or cracking them.

The home used drywall for the walls and ceilings, so team members replaced half the ceiling and one wall on the second floor. They used fans to dry out the wall frame before hanging the new panels. Other technicians performed the same work in the kitchen, removing half the ceiling and two panels on an interior wall.

At SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn, we carefully examine each home to determine which methods and tools can best help us return it to the owner in a dry condition, safe to live in again. If your home here in Bay Ridge, Greenpoint, or Park Slope, needs our services, call us today at (718) 522-4400.

What Materials Are Impacted by Broken Pipes in Williamsburg Kitchens?

2/18/2022 (Permalink)

Pipe Leak Call the professionals at SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn when your pipes leak.

Broken Sink Drains can Cause Substantial Water Damage to Williamsburg Kitchens Before the Problem is Discovered.

Broken fixtures and damages to areas around the sink can prove harmful and costly when water damages result. Under the sink, between supply lines serving the main faucet to drains moving grey water out of the house, many possible destructive damages might not be easy to diagnose initially.

The Damage of a Broken Drainpipe

While there are hundreds of pathways for water damage in Williamsburg homes, a broken or split drainage pipe can create a substantial water damage concern. The regulation for kitchen faucets is not to exceed a flow of 2.2 gallons per minute, but with a broken drainpipe you do not know about, you could be dealing with 22 gallons of water damage in the sink cabinet in as little as 10 minutes.

What Materials Are Affected by this Damage?

Because many do not leave their sink running continuously for long spans, drainage problems often happen over several days, as the short uses of drain pipe leak water onto the nearby structural elements. This cabinet is directly impacted, but water can also spread to threaten wall assemblies and flooring materials as moisture migration occurs.

Water Cleanup Strategies

Clearing out water damage from under the sink often involves repairing the plumbing damage and extracting any surface water. Moisture meters can determine the salvageability of affected materials and decide if reconstruction is necessary. This process can include several tools and products from our industry-leading inventory for restoration, which can include:

  • Air movers
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Portable heaters
  • Wet vacuums

There are instances where controlled demolition of the cabinet or connected building material is inevitable. Still, often with a fast response from our SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn team, these more extreme measures can be avoided. We are ready to help however you need when you call (718) 522-4400.

SERVPRO Knows Specialized Water Damage Techniques to Restore Your Furnishings in Williamsburg

SERVPRO knows that water flooding into your living room or finished basement could leave your belongings at risk. We have highly-trained water restoration technicians (WRT) on our crew to handle everything with precision.

Water damage in Williamsburg calls for careful planning, especially if your furniture and prized possessions get wet. SERVPRO may address some or all of the following depending on your situation:

  • Water spots may develop on furniture. Our technicians can tackle water spots that develop on dry-clean only upholstery.
  • Color bleeding may occur when metal, wooden legs, or fabrics get wet. This leads to staining of the carpets, which our team can address with specialized products and techniques.

With any water restoration project, the possible development of mildew and mold is always on our minds at SERVPRO. We work diligently using dehumidifiers and air movers to dry your interior, keeping mold and mildew at bay. Is It Expensive to Perform Professional Water Damage Repair in Brooklyn Homes?

Restoration Companies Such as SERVPRO Provide Affordable Water Damage Repair in Brooklyn

Property owners often experience stress when water damage occurs. The expense linked with water damage is one of the things homeowners worry about. Avoid hiring water damage repair companies that charge double the market cost just because of their name. SERVPRO handles water damage of any magnitude with the right equipment and innovative techniques at a reasonable cost.

After a water intrusion incident in your property, you may not witness the secondary damage immediately. However, if you do not perform effective water damage repair in your Brooklyn home, mold can grow on porous materials, and your wooden floor may warp. When you contact SERVPRO professionals, you can expect the following:

You may think your property is in good shape after attempting to repair water damage, but the trapped moisture may begin to show up after a couple of months. As a result, you may have a harder time recovering costs from your insurance company.

SERVPRO's restoration team uses specialized water removal, heating, and drying equipment. For rapid, successful drying, our team can use centrifugal air movers and indirect-fired furnaces to provide dry air and heat wet materials or the building’s interior structure directly. These methods result in a significant increase in evaporation.

Our methods are faster than those of other companies at drying out our customers' water-damaged properties. Typically, the restoration process can take a few days to complete based on the severity of the destruction. To guarantee that the drying process goes as smoothly as possible, our SERVPRO team uses moisture detection tools to monitor the drying process closely.

A failure to treat water damage promptly could result in loss of value to your property. Contact SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn at (718) 522-4400 for effective water damage repair to make it “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO's Water Restoration Process for Brooklyn Residents Always Includes Careful, Efficient Water Mitigation

Burst pipes or flooding are not the time to try DIY water clean-up methods. Doing so could leave you with a world of issues within your Brooklyn property, including secondary damage and the development of potentially harmful mold and mildew. No matter the water emergency you are facing, detailed water mitigation is the only way to ensure you get the best results. SERVPRO mitigates water damage and works using proven methods that save on time, money, and materials. Give our office a quick call 24/7, and we can send out a crew as soon as possible.

No matter the project's scope, immediate water mitigation in Brooklyn ensures your property gets back to normal as quickly as possible while controlling further damage. Standing water can be detrimental to many surfaces and materials, even if classified as clean water. Did you know that clean water turns into a gray water situation (Category 2) within 48 hours? When called for water mitigation and water removal services, our IICRC-certified technicians have all of the training to deal with each of the three water categories, including:

  • Category 1 – known as clean water, which is free of contaminants
  • Category 2 – known as gray water, which may contain chemical or biological contamination
  • Category 3 – known as black water, which holds harmful viruses and bacteria

During the mitigation and restoration process, we often use truck pumps for mass amounts of water and portable pumps for any contained flooding. Our technicians may apply EPA-registered spray disinfectant to any surfaces and standing water in a gray water situation. Many items may need to get disposed of during a black water event if decontamination is not possible. Our crew always wears the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as we work through the project.

SERVPRO Offers Prompt Response for all Water Restoration and Mitigation Projects in Brooklyn

Water mitigation is a crucial part of any restoration job, whether you have a brownstone with burst pipes or a single-family dwelling with ceiling leaks. Even a faulty appliance can send a significant amount of water into your Brooklyn home that must get addressed quickly to limit the level of damage. Professional water damage remediation with SERVPRO not only stops water from infiltrating dry space, but we also have the power to address hidden moisture while bringing down relative humidity.

To begin water mitigation in Brooklyn, SERVPRO arrives on the scene to perform a thorough assessment. Our crew chief takes note of the cause of water infiltration to formulate a plan of action that stops the flooding and allows the team to begin extraction. Timing is everything during a water clean up incident, and SERVPRO always ensures it gets done right the first time. We will:

    • Assess Water Migration – Because spilled water remains in motion and looks for dry spaces like building cavities and cracks, we follow the path to ensure no moisture gets left behind.
    • Perform Detailed Moisture Detection – Our Green Fleet comes fully stocked with moisture detection tells that allow us to seek out all areas where water may have traveled, leaving moisture behind. We may use thermal imaging camera technology, moisture meters, or borescopes that help us locate all problem zones. In some instances, a drill or hole punch in the wall might be the best practice for facilitating water removal.
  • Initiate Drying and Water Damage Repairs – With high-powered fans, filtration units, and dehumidifiers, we restore indoor air quality (IAQ) and relative humidity levels. Controlled demolition gets performed as needed, and everything is deodorized and sanitized to make it “Like it never even happened.” – Residential Contractor License #: 2015353DCA

InjectiDry System Protects Water Damaged Brooklyn Homes

As a leading company in the restoration industry, our team can help your Brooklyn home address the often damaging and widespread effects of a water damage incident. We know that only part of the effective services we can offer customers comes from the experience and training we acquire. The other part of this equation is the effective state-of-the-art equipment available to our recovery team when they roll out from our facility. From advanced mitigation tools to drying machines, our professionals can arrive at every situation with the ability to help.

Water damage incidents in your Brooklyn home can get out of control. It would be best to have a team of professionals with sophisticated equipment for both containment and recovery. Our SERVPRO technicians have multiple tools for removing standing water and even addressing the bulk of saturation and moisture concerns throughout the property, but contending with moisture and dampness in wall cavities, ceilings, floors, and other inaccessible areas requires advanced equipment.

The InjectiDry System has a minimalistic approach to addressing moisture and dampness beyond what can quickly get accessed and managed after a water damage incident. Understanding the location of these threats involves moisture detection tools, thermal imagery, and infrared cameras. We can identify the moisture pockets that can cause the most damage and direct our drying tools and the InjectiDry System directly at these points.

Often this device is critical for drying out dampness behind drywall, and it is helpful because it has multiple dry air hoses that can infuse this area with heated air to dry out moisture quickly. Because it gets installed behind the baseboard, these small holes can get quickly patched and entirely covered by the reinstallation of the trim at the bottom of an affected wall.

In many situations, the use of our InjectiDry System can prevent unnecessary tear-out and reconstruction in homes throughout our area. You can always count on the fast response and the sophisticated equipment like this from our SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn team. Give our crew a call anytime at (718) 522-4400.

SERVPRO gets water out of carpets during Williamsburg water mitigation

If you need help after a water-related incident in your home, it is a good idea to call the experts. SERVPRO technicians have the skills and equipment to restore your home “Like it never even happened.”

One of the tools SERVPRO employs for water mitigation in Williamsburg is extraction. Extraction tools help us press the water out of carpets and padding. One of our go-to extraction tools is the deep extractor. We use two types of deep extractors.

Stationary extractors rely on the weight of the professional to press water from carpets. Self-propelled extractors move across the carpet’s surface, and one of our techs can ride the machine to add extra weight and press out more water. We call this a Rover.

Thorough extraction makes the rest of the water drying process much quicker and easier. After extraction, our team can help with

  • Cleaning and disinfecting water-damaged textiles and furniture.
  • Drying carpets, rugs, and drapes.
  • Repairing or replacing damaged paint, wallpaper, and drywall.
  • Deodorizing your home to get rid of the damp smell.

Unexpected home disasters can happen that require water restoration in Williamsburg homes, such as water heater failures, toilet backups, floodwater, and pipe breaks. All of these can ruin the carpet; however, some water damage types may potentially save the carpet.

This SERVPRO location holds a residential contractor license #2015353DCA and a mold remediation certification #00055. The technicians can handle any needed controlled demolition needed due to damage from moisture and mold issues that can arise from it.

The technicians' carpet restoration methods vary in several ways depending on the carpet's construction materials. This ensures that the carpet does not bleed, shrink or incur any damage during the cleanup. After testing, the techs may choose to use:

  • Standard extraction and drying flat
  • Removal for drying in-plant
  • Use of tenting or floating applications

McCarren Park Williamsburg Outdoor Activities

The city of Williamsburg joined the city of Brooklyn in 1854, which in turn joined the city of New York in 1898, becoming one of five boroughs making up New York. Williamsburg remains a distinct neighborhood bordered by Greenpoint, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, East Williamsburg, and the East River. The population comprises a diverse mix of people representing Italians, Jewish, Hispanics, Poles, Puerto Ricans, and Dominicans.

The area was first settled in 1638 after the Dutch West India Company purchased the land from Native Americans. In 1664, the English captured the area and renamed the town from Boswijck to Bushwick. Initially settled by farmers and merchants, the village grew and changed names several times. The Town of Williamsburgh, spelled with an "h," was incorporated in 1827. Eventually, the town's name was shortened to Williamsburg in 1852. Williamsburg achieved significant development of industrial and economic growth. The Vanderbilt's, the Fisk's, the Pratt's, and the Pfizer's all played a significant role in the city's development. The Pratt Institute, Corning Glass Works, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals are just a few of the companies investing in the town.

Brooklyn joined New York as one of the five boroughs of the city in 1898, and the Williamsburg Bridge was built in 1903. Williamsburg quickly became the most densely populated area in New York City, facilitated by the new bridge with its residents commuting to Manhattan. Williamsburg has evolved over the years, becoming a highly diverse community. Rezoning in the 1990s has led to gentrification, investment, and conversion of the industrial regions into residential and commercial developments.

Williamsburg offers many venues and cultural experiences. A few of these are listed, and several reviewed in more detail.

SERVPRO and Other Water Restoration Companies Offer Brooklyn Residents Additional Services Apart from Availing Better Restoration Equipment

Water leaks and intrusions happen all the time. However, most are limited in scale, so you handle them on your own. When a major incident happens at your Brooklyn house, you may think that you only need to upscale the equipment to restore normalcy.

What types of equipment are standard for water restoration?

Water restoration companies in Brooklyn have a plethora of equipment for handling various restoration tasks in water-damaged properties. However, four categories of equipment are crucial, including:

  • Water extractors
  • Humidity controllers
  • Evaporation boosters
  • Moisture diagnostic equipment

If you plan to handle the water restoration as a DIY project, the most likely way you can access the necessary equipment is by hiring them since the cost of buying is prohibitive. Even with the rental option, you are less likely to get all the equipment you might need. You can get water extractors, dehumidifiers, and air movers but lack the smaller items such as moisture meters and hygrometers that provide crucial data to SERVPRO technicians improving coordination.

Apart from accessing all the necessary equipment, it also takes the right skills to get the right results when restoring your damaged property.

How do skills affect the restoration process?

  • Matching the equipment type with the prevailing conditions
  • Correct placement of the equipment
  • Monitoring changes and making appropriate adjustments

You may take the equipment at face value. For instance, dehumidifiers extract moisture from the air. However, there are different categories of dehumidifiers out there, including refrigerant, desiccant, and LGR, among others. Each of these categories is best suited for specific conditions. For instance, the refrigerant variety works best within a temperature range between 70° to 90°F. Without such information, you might not get the results you expect, even when using the best equipment. Our SERVPRO technicians receive continuous training equipping them with the skills to maximize productivity.

Involving water restoration companies in your project improves efficiency levels. Call SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn at (718) 522-4400 to assist you. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

What Happens When Water Gets Trapped in Wall Systems?

7/22/2020 (Permalink)

thermal camera held pointing at a wall SERVPRO Can Provide Advanced Detection Devices along with Skilled Technicians and Contractors to Restore Your Water-Damaged Brooklyn Residence

When materials become saturated in your Brooklyn home, there are several strategies to dry and repair these compromised areas.

Migrating water losses after a disaster can be highly damaging to Brooklyn homes and apartments. Because much of your plumbing has gotten installed within wall systems for aesthetic reasons, a breach in this network could severely impact structural cavities as well as the surface layers nearby. Many threats exist when water becomes trapped in these wall and ceiling systems, including deterioration, microbial growth, and access to spread to other areas of the property.

Regarding water removal for Brooklyn properties

There are multiple tools and devices ideal for addressing traditional standing water concerns throughout the house. When it comes to more complex conditions like trapped moisture, this removal effort requires more sophisticated approaches. Wall systems can quickly absorb migrating loss effects, making it vital to begin restorative efforts as soon as possible.

How Bad is the Damage?

It can often be wise to begin the restoration and recovery processes with an assessment of the damaged areas to determine the severity of the situation. With water losses, detection devices are often required to get the proper perspective on the areas in question. Careful inspections of these areas can help identify where moisture pockets and dampness exist beyond the surface. We can then deploy the appropriate drying techniques to protect exposed wall system elements like drywall, insulation, or framework. Moisture detection devices include:

Is Controlled Demolition Necessary?

With a team of in-house contractors that can work alongside our SERVPRO technicians on-site, we can offer real-time emergency services that can protect more of your property. One of these initial actions that our general contractors can take is controlled demolition. There are many distinct advantages to choosing this approach to being drying and recovery efforts in your home. These include:

  • Ease of Access to Damaged Areas - By removing portions of damaged materials from the affected areas in your house, we can have a direct access point to broken pipes and other causes of the water damage trapped in the walls.
  • Removal of Deteriorating Materials – The action of controlled demolition is a benefit to the property itself. Deterioration and moisture damage can spread throughout sensitive surfaces drywall quickly and continually, making the removal of compromised materials vital.
  • More Efficient Drying – Openings in the interior wall systems can provide greater access to moisture and dampness tracked with our detection tools for drying with air movers and other evaporative equipment.

What Drying Solutions Should Begin?

Drying is always going to be a fundamental practice of returning your water-damaged property to its original conditions. There are many tools and devices that play a role in this process. To appropriately dry out wall systems, provisions must first get made. Controlled demolition can provide access for drying equipment like our low-profile air movers, while holes drilled behind the removed baseboard of drywall surfaces can provide entry points for focused blasts of heated air. While there are dozens of tools and pieces of equipment ideal for addressing surface and trapped moisture concerns, we often choose a combination of:

  • Positive Pressure Systems
  • Wet Vacuums
  • Centrifugal Air Movers
  • Desiccant Dehumidifiers

How Can SERVPRO Make it “Like it never even happened."?

Repairs and reconstruction are often necessary to return your property to preloss condition, and this requires a fast transition between mitigation and these structural requirements. Initially, our contractors can work to provide your home with repairs to areas like breached plumbing and other pressing repairs. Replacing damaged sections of pipe or compromised fixtures can allow water service to get restored to your home and mitigation to continue.

Reinstallation of discarded materials is also a pressing need after mitigation completes, and our contractors can seamlessly transition to this phase of recovery when they are able. With careful, controlled demolition, reconstruction should often be more efficient than full-scale build back. Between replacing insulation and missing pieces of drywall to patching the holes made to use our positive pressure system, we can improve the look and feel of your property after a water loss incident

Disasters do not wait for convenient times to strike, meaning that you should respond and react to these emergencies as promptly as possible. We can often reach your home within hours of the first call that you make to our emergency staffed line at (718) 522-4400.

We Had a Water Emergency, Why Should I Call SERVPRO?

Water Damage Restoration Brings Your Brooklyn Home Back to Pre-Loss Condition, and SERVPRO is Faster To Any Size Disaster!

A water loss incident often brings significant property damage. Some of the problems may be slight, which includes staining on the walls or ceilings. However, any moisture that has the chance to accumulate enhances potential structure damage or the onset of mold. If you have moisture or leaking that puts water behind baseboards and walls, you are dealing with a hidden threat, which is why it is best to call our skilled technicians at SERVPRO to handle the water emergency that you have in your Brooklyn home.

Why is Moisture Detection so Important?

The longer that moisture lingers anywhere in your home, the more secondary damage can develop. When you need water damage restoration in Brooklyn, our team of trained water restoration technicians (WRT) arrives quickly to get started on water removal. We have a broad range of advanced equipment and moisture detection tools to facilitate cleanup. Failing to address all areas of moisture can cause harm to building materials or further into your structural elements.

Why is it Important to Follow Where the Water Went?

Once water infiltrates your home, regardless of the cause, it migrates from areas of saturation into dry areas. Drywall and other building materials like wood are porous. What this means is that they attract and hold onto a substantial amount of water. This water retention brings on issues like warping, swelling, and eventual breakdown. There is also the potential for mold infestation should moisture be left to linger for too long. Our team uses specialized moisture detection tools to monitor the walls carefully and floors in your home to tell us whether or not drying is working effectively.

What Drying and Moisture Detection Tools Do You Use?

SERVPRO brings a vast assortment of tools and advanced technology to each Brooklyn water damage restoration project. All of them work in unison to pull up water and look for hidden moisture and speed up drying times. Our attention to detail helps us lessen water damage under your carpets or flooring and behind the walls and baseboards throughout the water loss zone. This level of planning and a unique formula we use tells us just what equipment and how many units are necessary to get the best results.

Some of the devices that we use for detecting and monitoring moisture include:

  • Moisture meters, such as non-penetrating and penetrating moisture meters, determine the moisture content in certain materials, which tells our team when your structure is dry.
  • Moisture sensors tell us just how much moisture remains in soft materials, much like your carpets and carpet padding.
  • Thermo-Hygrometers help to measure the temperature and the relative humidity in the air.

Why Are Your Methods Better Than DIY?

Even if you have a relatively powerful wet-dry vacuum to try lifting water from floors, you do not have the professional-grade equipment that brings faster results. More substantial jobs and moisture detection call for the help of skilled technicians. All of our water restoration professionals have training following the standards set forth by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). Some of the different tools that we use to execute prompt, reliable water removal includes:

  • Portable and submersible pumps often used as go-to equipment for a variety of standard jobs
  • Truck-mounted extractors are suitable for removing hundreds to thousands of gallons of water, even if it contains debris
  • Rovers, or ride-on units, that work by using the operator's weight to push down carpeting, pulling up moisture

Will a Lot of My Belongings Get Discarded?

SERVPRO technicians work diligently to salvage water damaged belongings whenever possible. In some cases, we provide pack-out services to bring items off-site for further restoration efforts. Everything that is moved or discarded gets logged for your information and added to your insurance claim.

When some building materials get saturated to the point that they are no longer salvageable, our team performs what is known as controlled demolition. We perform strategically placed cuts to remove damaged sheetrock and remove the baseboards, which allows us the chance to put air movers into place, which boosts airflow for efficient drying. All materials removed during controlled demolition get replaced with new materials to make it, "Like it never even happened."

To wrap up your water damage restoration project, our team tests areas for moisture and then implements cleaning and disinfection measures using EPA-registered products. Everything is sanitized and back to normal so that you and your family can resume your daily routine.

SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn is available for 24/7 emergency service. To have a crew assigned to your water damage restoration project, give us a call at (718) 522-4400.

Do Professional Extraction Tools Work Better Than Traditional Water Removal?

5/7/2020 (Permalink)

Drying Up Your Brooklyn Apartment Involves Many Sophisticated and Powerful Tools in Our Extraction Equipment Inventory.

There is a distinct difference between professional extraction and drying and what you might be able to do on your own in the apartment after a disaster. As much as DIY cleanup can seemingly save money, it is not always as cost-effective as it might seem.

In terms of water removal for Brooklyn homes and apartments alone, our SERVPRO professionals can utilize dozens of different extraction and drying tools to get the job done. The choices between these pieces of equipment vary depending on the circumstances, the area where the damage occurs, and the types of materials that have gotten involved.

When Is the Damage Bad Enough to Need Professionals?

It is important to note that water loss emergencies are rarely mild enough to not require some form of intervention and work by our experienced technicians. Some conditions that could encourage a prompt securing of our SERVPRO team are:

  • Standing Water – Pooling water in a damaged area can be destructive to many of the materials. Wood and sheetrock exposed to standing water can quickly absorb this water and allow for a much more rapid deterioration of the construction element.

  • Migrating Water – You might not always know how widespread water loss effects can be, but if water has moved beyond the surface of materials, you need the sophisticated tools of our team to identify moisture pockets and dampness beyond what the eye can see.
  • Hidden Damages – In the same way that water can migrate throughout your apartment, damages can exist and persist out of sight without discovery tools and positive pressure drying systems getting used.

What Extraction Tools Work Best?

We have many efficient extraction tools, including:

With the open layout of many area apartments, your unit can become quickly compromised by a substantial loss. Give our SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn team a call today at (718) 522-4400 to help.

Mitigating Water Damage in a Brooklyn Home

Water damage is a frustrating concern for many New York homeowners, mainly because it can occur with little to no warning in hard-to-reach places in the home. Non-weather water damage claims now cost over $6,700 on average, and losses exceeding $500,000 have doubled since 2016. Without fast action, water can quickly create thriving environments for mold and microbes that can cause health effects.

If your Brooklyn residence requires water damage cleanup, SERVPRO restoration technicians are always available to restore your home to a preloss condition. These Institute of Inspection Cleanup and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certified pros receive extensive education on how to maintain the standards necessary for homes to be clean and safe after water-related disasters. Your local SERVPRO is also licensed to offer mold remediation (#00055) and residential contracting services (#2015353DCA), so you get an all-in-one home restoration package.

Risks Posed by a Toilet Overflow

  • Contamination of porous materials. Even clean toilets can harbor E. coli and other harmful bacteria. The moisture exposure alone creates an environment that allows for mold growth in as little as 48 hours. Carpeting, fabrics, and rugs in the vicinity may require disposal, depending on the duration of exposure.
  • Foul odors.Microbes and bacteria create unpleasant odors, particularly in porous surfaces and natural materials. Wet, musty odors from water damage are noticeable in as little as a few hours after initial exposure.
  • Structural damage. Wet floors must be cleaned and dried quickly to minimize risk to the subflooring beneath.

SERVPRO's Sanitizing Solutions

Because of the risks posed by bacteria even in clean toilets, SERVPRO technicians are careful to thoroughly disinfect water-damaged areas of your home, including walls and floors. Light soiling on carpet may only require a hot water treatment or shampooing. Ceramic tile flooring in the bathroom, meanwhile, can be addressed with careful drying and application of antimicrobials. The tile itself is non-porous, but the grout can take on water. If there is discoloration on the grout, technicians can use specialized cleaners to address the issue.

SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn has the tools and techniques necessary to ensure that your home looks, "Like it never even happened." Call (718) 522-4400 for disaster mitigation that can start in as little as four hours.

Preventive Action and Cleanup of a Failed Water Heater

3/13/2019 (Permalink)

Perform regular maintenance to your water heater

When the valve on your water heater fails or the unit springs a leak, you could literally have gallons of water flooding that level of your home in minutes. If the leaking water heater is not in the basement you run the further risk of your home sustaining water damage in the walls and ceilings below that from seepage. Here are some ways to prevent or mitigate water damage from a failed water heater in Park Slope, NY.

1. Perform Regular Maintenance

In the event you are hearing unusual noises from your water heater, such as popping or thumping, it could be caused by mineral buildup on the inside of the tank or on the element. Cleaning out your water heater to remove mineral sediment is a good idea. Be sure to follow your unit’s manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance regularly to help prevent such a disaster from occurring.

2. Make Needed Repairs

If cleaning out and other maintenance measures don’t stop the problem, and especially if a leaking water heater accompanies the noises, your best bet would be to call a plumbing service to come take a look and a listen in case action is needed. Repairs can often stave off problems.

3. Quick Cleanup

When all preventive measures fail and a broken water heater floods your home, it is imperative to stop the leak as quickly as possible by shutting off the water supply. The next most crucial step is removing the water and mitigating the damage water can cause to your home.

The mess and damage can feel overwhelming. Call a water damage repair specialist in Park Slope, NY, to come as soon as possible and help with the cleanup process. They will use powerful extraction equipment to remove as much water as possible and then assess the damage and help with the salvage and repair process. A broken or heavily leaking water heater can be intimidating but with help, you will see your way through.

Common Questions When You Fill Out a Claim for Water Damage

When the cold hits, your Park Slope, NY, home could be facing issues with bursting pipes. Fortunately, your insurance policy can help. Here are a few of the common questions people have with filing a claim for water damage.

1. What Damage is Covered?

When it comes to damage caused by water in your home, several causes may be covered by your insurance. Sudden damages such as sewer back up, an accidental break in the plumbing, storm caused damage, or flooding are all instances insurance companies usually cover. Gradual damage which occurs over time is usually considered neglect on the part of the homeowner and will most likely not be covered. This is why it’s important to conduct any repairs as soon as water caused damage is found.

2. What Other Services May Be Covered?

Your insurance provider may also include coverage for the cost of hiring a professional cleanup and restoration service to help restore your home. These professionals can assess the damage and formulate a plan for repair and restoration. Your insurance company may also be able to help you contact a plumbing professional who can help fix broken pipe issues in your home to help prevent further problems with bursting pipes.

3. What Things Can You Do?

Aside from fixing any damage you find as soon as you can, there are a few things a homeowner can do to help the insurance process. The first is to understand your policy, and what it covers and does not cover. It may also be helpful to conduct a home maintenance check regularly and maintain a record of all your home repairs.

If you’ve had issues with bursting pipes, it’s important to know what type of water damage your policy covers. Your policy may also offer coverage for the costs of hiring professionals to help restore your home after the damage occurs. Remember, it’s important to know what's in your policy when filing a claim.

Do Not Learn About Frozen Pipes the Hard Way

12/17/2018 (Permalink)

You may end up with water damage due to frozen pipes in your Brooklyn home

If you get deep, winter freezes in Brooklyn, NY, you’re probably already an expert. You know what areas of your home are the most susceptible. You know what to do in those areas to prevent pipe and water damage. Your action plan is in place. When the meteorologists warn of a hard freeze, you are ready,
Every action plan has some common elements.

  • Turn on all faucets so that they are just trickling. The theory is that moving water doesn’t freeze.
  • Expose your pipes to warmth. Open cupboards and closet doors. If possible, warm up pipes in uninsulated areas.
  • Closely monitor your home. Make sure the faucets continue trickling. Be ready to act in the event of a problem.

Despite your best efforts, there may still be situations where you end up with damage due to frozen pipes.

When They Break, Follow These Steps

  1. Put a bucket under the leak and shut off the water. There should be a shutoff that controls the flow of water into that pipe. Turn that shutoff immediately or, to be safe, shut off the main.

  2. Eliminate the standing water as quickly as possible. A wet vac works well in this situation. If you caught the leak quickly, a little do-it-yourself cleanup would do the job. If the water damage is substantial, consider bringing in flood remediation specialists to address the problem.

  3. Fix the broken pipe. First, be sure that the pipe is no longer frozen. Repair it if your plumbing skills are up to it. Patch it if you have the materials and a bit of know-how. Otherwise, call your plumber or that friend who knows how to do everything.

If You Are Vigilant and Prepared, Frozen Pipes Are Only a Nuisance

When the temperature plummets, follow your action plan. If you still end up with a problem, be ready to minimize the damage and make repairs. All that stands between a small problem and a catastrophe is you.

The Cost of Flood Damage: 3 Factors To Consider

10/11/2018 (Permalink)

Flooded basement in a Brooklyn, NY home

Flooding can come from a variety of sources, from overflowing washing machines and toilets to storms, and can affect your Brooklyn, NY, home in several ways. You may be looking at a large damage repair bill in the aftermath. Understanding what might impact the total cost can help you plan a budget and avoid financial surprises that could put you deep into debt.

1. The Size of the Flood

Because each flooding event is different, considering the size of the one you are dealing with can help you estimate the cost of repairs. For example, if poor drainage and a few rainy days result in basement water that is more than a foot deep, you may have to rent a sump pump to remove it. Smaller floods can be cheaper to remedy, but if mold develops afterward, you may have to call in a flood damage and mold removal company to handle it properly.

2. The Condition of the Water

As you try to estimate your flood damage repair bill, keep in mind that the condition of the water may affect how simple the cleanup will be. If the flood came from an outdoor source, such as an overflowing stream or creek, then cleanup technicians will likely label the water a category 3 or “black water” situation. This water could contain human and animal feces, chemical waste and other toxins that make it potentially hazardous to handle without professional assistance.

3. The Damage to Your Home’s Interior

It can be difficult to gauge the cost of the damage caused by the average flood because it may depend on where the water entered your home and the depth it reached. For instance, a basement flood may be less damaging than one from a large storm-fueled flood that affected the main floor of your home and its contents.

Flood damage repair costs can depend on several factors when water invades your Brooklyn, NY, home. Understanding each of these factors can help you prepare a budget and stay on track with what needs to be done to restore your home.

Don’t Flush Your Savings down the Drain: Understanding Sewer Backups and Homeowner Claims

9/16/2018 (Permalink)

The rainy season in flood zones can produce a lot of anxiety for homeowners. Especially, when you consider that basic home insurance policies may not cover damage incurred by a sewer backup, meaning that if sewage starts spilling over your toilet, contaminating and damaging your home, you may be left footing the bill; however, even if your policy covers backups, there are still some things that you should understand.

1. Understand the Potential Causes of a Backup

A sewage backup typically doesn’t happen without reason, and sometimes these reasons are things you have control over. For instance, one of the main causes of a backup is a blockage in the line due to roots. Shrubs, bushes, trees can produce roots that are dense enough to break through your sewer lines, clogging the pipes and ultimately causing a backup.

2. Understand Common Prevention Tactics

Understanding how a sewer backup occurs enables you to perform preventative maintenance. For instance, you can ensure that no trees or shrubs are encroaching in areas where the waste lines run. You can also ensure that you dispose of things like grease and paper properly, and you can install a backwater prevention valve.

3. Understand the Cleanup Process

In the unfortunate event that you experience a sewage backup, you should familiarize yourself with the cleanup process, which includes a lot of wet vacuuming, mopping, disinfecting, and any other contaminant removal. However, it may be a good idea to call in restoration specialists to assist you in this process, and it will likely be a requirement by any insurance coverage you may have.

4. Understand the Process of Filing a Claim

Most insurance companies expect certain things when clients file claims. For instance, you should have before and after photos of the damaged area. You should itemize a list of property that was damaged or lost. And, you should contact your insurance representative immediately. It is also a good idea to save any receipts related to any restoration work.

Nobody wants to experience a sewer backup, but if you are in Brooklyn, NY, it is necessary to understand the basics and to know what your homeowner policy covers.

Other items, such as electronics and appliances, may need to be thrown away rather than saved. Let the experts help you clean your belongings so you can make sure everything is done right.

How To Avoid Water Damage in Your Home

6/25/2018 (Permalink)

Kitchen water damage in Brooklyn, New York

Owning a home comes with many responsibilities. When you have excess water in your home, you may have to call water restoration specialists to take care of problems caused by a broken pipe that went unnoticed. With regular maintenance and inspection, however, you can avoid extensive water damage by finding problems before they get to the point of causing damage.

General Issues

Any component of the plumbing system in your home in Brooklyn, NY, has the potential to cause problems if it breaks. When you inspect your home, there are several things to look for:

• A clogged shower, sink or toilet
• Drippy faucets
• Leaks under sinks
• A toilet that is constantly refilling, even when not being flushed

To avoid long-term issues with these problems, fix them right away. Replace valves and seals that are broken or faulty. Pay attention to your water bill, as a hidden leak could spike it considerably and cause excess water in your home, leaving you with a need for pipe cleanup. Look for corrosion or mold growth, and keep the humidity levels steady.

Appliance Care

Any appliance that uses water also needs regular maintenance to prevent a water damage situation. Old hoses and supply lines can form cracks. It is important to have a professional inspect your water heater every two years and perform regular maintenance. Other appliances, such as your washing machine, need to be at least three inches from a wall to keep hoses from being crowded and developing kinks that can lead to leaks. Replace kinked hoses that you find during your regular inspections.

HVAC Maintenance

Schedule regular maintenance of your HVAC system. Professionals can clean the coils and determine if any parts need to be replaced. Condensation on anything but a cooling suction line can cause water damage over time as it drips on the most convenient surface around it.

Water in your home can cause severe damage. You can circumvent many problems, however, simply by having a regular maintenance schedule.

Helpful Hints About Toilet Replacement

3/21/2018 (Permalink)

Toilet Repaired in New York

A toilet is expected to be reliable, and they can last for 30 years or more. But sometimes the porcelain material they are cast in can develop a crack or the tank may break. When that occurs and water begins to escape, it is time to replace the leaking toilet. Here are a few tips to help you master the plumbing repair.

Preparation

After discovering the leak, there are a few steps to take before you can replace the toilet.

• Before beginning the project, purchase a wax ring gasket, water-supply tube, and toilet.
• There are different types of water a broken toilet can leak. If the toilet bowl itself is leaking, consider calling a professional cleanup crew to make sure the water is not contaminated and hasn’t seeped into your walls and flooring.
• Once the water is removed, allow the area to dry thoroughly.
• Remove all standing water from the toilet tank and toilet bowl.

Removal

Once the area is dry and disinfected, you are ready to remove the old toilet.

• Disconnect the water supply line from the toilet.
• Remove the bolts securing the toilet to the floor.
• Lift the cracked toilet away.
• Scrape the wax ring and check flange for cracks.

Replacement

Time to replace that leaking toilet with a new one.

• Center new wax gasket over the flange.
• Connect the water supply to the toilet base.
• Set the toilet in place over the wax gasket and press softly until the toilet meets the floor.
• Tighten bolts or hex nuts at toilet base.
• Connect water supply to wall shut-off valve.
• Sit on the toilet to compress further and re-tighten bolts.

Once the water is restored to the toilet, flush the unit several times. If water leaks between the toilet and floor, it probably means the wax ring was not properly seated or didn’t seal correctly. To correct the issue, consider installing a new ring to finish the toilet repair.

Don’t be intimidated by an old, cracked toilet. Sure, a leaking toilet can be exasperating in Park Slope, NY, but by following these easy steps, you can quickly replace your broken toilet with a new one.

The 5 Step Water Damage Restoration Process

7/25/2017 (Permalink)

The 5 Step Water Damage Restoration Process

Flood damage is one of the most expensive types of property damage in the United States. Each year, billions of dollars are spent on repairing damage do to pipe breaks, supply line breaks or natural sources of flooding. Thankfully, water damage is almost always containable. But it is absolutely imperative that a professional restoration company be called in to begin mitigation efforts, the second any water in the home or water in the business is seen. Left untreated, flood damage will quickly compromise the structure and its materials, leading to potentially massive property damage and even condemnation of the property.

The good news is that, in the United States, hundreds of years of indoor plumbing, living on rivers and lakes and experiencing some of the most severed weather in the world, have all conspired to create a water damage restoration industry that is the best in the world. Almost every town in America has at least one professional restoration company. It's crucial that if any flood damage occurs to a home or property, the local professional restoration company is called in as soon as possible. With a prompt response, flood damage can almost always be completely reversed. With a delay of more than 24 hours, however, the chance of a successful restoration begins dropping precipitously with every passing hour.

The first step in the water cleanup process is calling in a team of restoration and mitigation specialists to the flooded home or business. A professional mitigation team has access to heavy-duty, specialized equipment that is specifically designed to handle flooded homes or business. They also have the expertise and manpower to attack the situation, head on, completely removing all water from the property, typically within just a few hours of arrival. Remember, the sooner a call to the pros is made, the higher the chances of a successful mitigation of potential damage.

The next phase of the cleanup process begins the second the water cleanup team arrives. They will immediately enter the property, surveying the extent of the water in the home or water in the business. At this stage, they will locate the supply line break, pipe break or other failure. If the pipe break or supply line break is causing active leaking, the water cleanup team will shut off the source of any additional flooding. In some cases, the supply line break or pipe break may need to be welded off using heavy equipment, such as torch cutters and gas welders.

If there is standing water in the business or home, the team will begin its extraction. Using ultra-powerful pumps and special vacuum equipment, the team will be able to remove up to 2,000 gallons of water in the home or water in the business, per hour. Within one hour or less, all standing water in the flooded home or business will be completely evacuated.

Next, the cleanup team will begin the drying process. This will be carried out through the use of heavy-duty drying equipment, such as that seen in car washes, as well as giant and powerful dehumidifiers. The drying process is the longest stage of cleanup, usually taking between a few hours to a full day. Upon completion, the flooded home or business will no longer have any traces of uncontained water. This will mark the point at which the structure is no longer at risk of incurring further water damage.

Finally, the team will thoroughly clean every item and surface affected by the flood water. This is to prevent mildew and mold growth, as well as removing smells that inevitably come with materials being soaked.

Tips for Choosing the Right Water Damage Restoration Company

Tips for Choosing the Right Water Damage Restoration Company

Broken sewerage systems, plumbing technicalities, and floods can cause serious water damage to a home or a commercial building. As a homeowner or a manager of a commercial building, it's prudent to consider hiring the services of professional water damage remediation services to prevent the damage from escalating and causing even further damages like mold buildup or collapsing of the entire building. Furthermore, such damages can cause problems to your wiring system and affect other expensive appliances like the air conditioning unit. Time is crucial when it comes to responding to flood damage. If the flood damage is not resolved as soon as possible it might lead to other substantial losses that will definitely be too costly to replace or repair. The only ideal step to take is to hire a professional water cleanup service provider to restore the mess. Here are a few tips and guidelines on how to choose the best professionals for the job.

Certifications and accreditation

Although the mitigation process is supposed to commence as soon as possible, it doesn't mean that due diligence shouldn't be followed. Don't just hire anyone who claims to be certified and experienced in offering flood damage restoration services in the neighborhood without verifying the certifications and accreditation. In fact, a credible water cleanup contractor should have specializations in other fields such as plumbing and wiring so as to disconnect and connect broken pipes to restore the water damage satisfactorily. The contractor should have accreditation documents from relevant bodies like the Better Business Bureau.

Years of experience in the mitigation

Hire experienced professionals who have handled water damage mitigation situations that are even worse than the current flood damage problem. Experienced professionals have a good reputation. A good start is to ask friends and close family members for referrals of some of the reputable water damage restoration professionals in the neighborhood who can handle comprehensive drying.

Proximity

Remember, proximity is an issue here, therefore don't hire contractors who will take several days to get to your home when it has started developing mold. Mold and fungus can start developing on the site after two days. If the home or commercial building gets a mold manifestation, it may require that the building owner hires a mold removal company on top of the water damage restoration expenses. Some valuable possessions and furniture can get damaged if not salvaged in good time. Therefore, hiring professional contractors from the locality is a good idea.

Insured and bonded

To avoid unnecessary lawsuits in case of any unexpected eventualities during the water in a home or water in a business drying process, it's advisable to hire insured and bonded water in home or water in business removal companies. The water mitigation company should be bonded and licensed and comply with all policies regarding professional operation of a mitigation company.

Tools and equipment

The tools and modern equipment used by the water cleanup companies in removing the water in home or water in business are designed to be more effective than equipment sold for home use. Most businesses or homes can't afford to buy the expensive drying equipment necessary for the drying of the water for personal use. It's necessary to inquire about the type of equipment that the water in home or water in business Restoration Company will use in the water cleanup before signing any contract papers. Sometimes usage of certain equipment is prohibited in some residential estates.

The water removal company professionals should also wear protective gear such as gloves and masks when handling contaminated water from broken sewerage systems so as to avoid cross contamination. Ask the residential or commercial water Restoration Company to recommend any necessary repairs that should be conducted on the building after the restoration project.

Flood Safety Awareness

11/21/2016 (Permalink)

Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the United States.

Flooding can occur during any season, but some areas of the country are at greater risk at certain times of the year. Coastal areas are at greater risk for flooding during hurricane season (i.e., June to November).  Flooding can occur in several ways, including the following.

  • Excessive rain or snowmelt cannot be fully absorbed into the ground.
  • Waterways are blocked with debris or ice and overflow.
  • Water containment systems break, such as water or sewer systems.
  • Strong winds from tropical storms or hurricanes cause a storm surge by pushing seawater onto land. The speed and duration of flooding can vary significantly.

EVACUATION

To avoid being trapped when floodwaters threaten your area, the best action to protect yourself and your family is to evacuate before flooding starts. Know and follow the directions from local officials for community evacuation or seek high ground for localized flooding. If you do not evacuate before the flooding occurs or you are trapped by flash flooding, do not enter flooded areas or moving water either on foot or in a vehicle, including areas that appear to have only inches of water. Protecting yourself today means having sources for information, preparing your home or workplace, developing an emergency communications plan, and knowing what to do when a flood is approaching your home or business. Taking action today can save lives and property. Know your flood risk.  Move costly possessions and important documents – shift valuables and electrical goods off the floor for their own protection, ideally upstairs. SERVPRO of NORTHWEST BROOKLYN recommends the following steps to protect you, your family, and your home.

  • Protect furnishing – Small pieces of furniture, rugs, and draperies can be moved upstairs if flooding looks likely.
  • Stock up on sandbags – Use sandbags to block doorways, as these will help you fight the flooding and protect your home.
  • Protect Irreplaceables – Items of sentimental value, such as photos, should be packed in waterproof containers or bags and put somewhere safe, ideally upstairs. No amount of insurance money can bring these back, so put them out of harm’s way.
  • List important contacts – write down important numbers such as your home insurance provider and policy number.
  • Keep informed – Watch the weather forecast to keep up-to-date on any threats

SERVPRO of NW BROOKLYN is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  Whether you need emergency flood damage restoration or top-to-bottom home cleaning, you can trust us to make your house feel like home again.
