Pack Out and Fire Damage Restoration in Brooklyn

Fire damage needs so many different types of mitigation. There is damage to both the structure and contents from the fire. Additional problems from the water or extinguishing agent used to put out the fire, and then there are the odors smoke leaves behind.

SERVPRO was called to mitigate a massive house fire in a two-story Brooklyn home. The fire began in the kitchen and gutted much of the downstairs. Our technicians got to work immediately and extracted the water to make the carpeting less cumbersome and easier to remove as it was a loss. We removed fire loss items and debris as they only contribute to the pungent odor if they remain on-property.

Charred sheetrock was cut away using controlled demolition techniques. Soot often contains acids that damage fabrics and carry odors. We use handheld vacuums with HEPA filtration to pick up soot from surfaces. The weakened ceilings made the upstairs unsafe until we finished the restoration and completed repairs for the downstairs.

Our technicians spoke with the homeowner and adjuster for permission to remove restorable items from the upstairs for cleaning and deodorizing at our location as the contents were not directly affected by the fire, but smoke permeated some things. When we pack out a job site, our technicians carefully wrap and catalog each item. We give a detailed list of the contents removed that includes photos and condition, to both the adjuster and homeowner.

Once SERVPRO technicians completed the pack out, we dried and ventilated the structure. In the case of a fire loss of this scale, the mitigation of the fire-damaged building elements, and removal prepare the property for rebuilding. Which means it needs to be dry, sanitary, and without smoke odors. After drying and wiping down surfaces, we used both a thermal fogger and an ozone machine to neutralize the odors. Our SERVPRO location offers a full suite of services, so our team can clean, restore, and rebuild a home from a fire loss.

SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn is available to help you with fire damage at (718) 522-4400. Our emergency response team is available 24/7 to make your fire loss, "Like it never even happened."

Professional Help for Park Slope Flood Damage

Extreme weather patterns are more common every year, exposing your Park Slope property to the risk of harm from flooding. When heavy rains and winds cause excess water to flow into your brownstone or condo you need to take fast action. Our well-qualified team of water damage specialists is ready to respond quickly with the skills and equipment required to remediate the damage done by flooding.

Park Slope like many areas of Brooklyn is no stranger to flood damage. The Atlantic Ocean, more precisely Upper Bay, is just blocks to the west with the potential to deliver storm surge if a strong weather system arrives. Flash flooding following torrential rains can make its way into your home, requiring fast action with professional equipment to prevent progressive or permanent damage.

Our SERVPRO crews count many Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRT) among the ranks, trained in the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) coursework. When we arrive at your flooded home an experienced manager assesses the damage and creates a mitigation plan. Each of our service vehicles packs water removal and structural drying equipment, avoiding any delay as crew members implement the plan.

Pumps take care of water deeper than two inches, and wanded extractors pull moisture out of cracks and crevices. SERVPRO technicians are skilled at measuring moisture levels in porous building materials and employing thermal imaging equipment to locate water that migrated into building cavities. We make use of strategies like flood cuts or holes drilled in mortar joints to release the water and open access to the damp areas so drying techniques work more efficiently.

Flood water is contaminated, mixing with the sea, road chemicals, decaying organic materials, and even sewage. SERVPRO can contain the fouled water, disposing of it as required by local regulation. We use cleansing products and tools to clear away the soiling brought in your home by the Category 3 water and treat affected areas with EPA-registered disinfectants. Once the flooded space is clean and sanitized we set up drying perimeters to reduce the moisture content of your home’s structural components to normal levels. A balance of air movement, temperature, and dehumidification brings back the preloss conditions in a controlled way, ensuring we avoid secondary issues like mold growth.

SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn knows how overwhelming flood damage can be, so we prepare our crews with the training and equipment to remediate the scenario fast. Call us at (718) 522-4400 round the clock, 365 days a year.

InjectiDry System Protects Water Damaged Brooklyn Homes

As a leading company in the restoration industry, our team can help your Brooklyn home to address the often damaging and widespread effects of a water loss incident. We know that only part of effective services that we can offer customers comes from the experience and training that we acquire. The other part of this equation is the effective state-of-the-art equipment that is available to our recovery team when they roll out from our facility. From advanced mitigation tools to drying machines, our professionals can arrive to every situation with the ability to help.

Water damage incidents in your Brooklyn home can get out of control. You need a team of professionals with sophisticated equipment for both containment and recovery. Our SERVPRO technicians have multiple tools for removing standing water and even addressing the bulk of saturation and moisture concerns throughout the property, but contending with moisture and dampness in wall cavities, ceilings, floors, and other inaccessible areas requires advanced equipment.

The InjectiDry System has a minimalistic approach to addressing moisture and dampness beyond what can easily get accessed and addressed after a water loss incident. Understanding the location of these threats involves moisture detection tools, thermal imagery, and infrared cameras. We can identify with all of these devices the moisture pockets that can cause the most damage and direct our drying tools and the InjectiDry System directly at these points.

Often this device is critical for drying out dampness behind drywall, and it is useful because it has multiple dry air hoses that can infuse this area with heated air to dry out moisture quickly. Because it gets installed behind the baseboard, these small holes can get quickly patched and entirely covered by the reinstallation of the framing at the bottom of an affected wall.

In many situations, the use of our InjectiDry System can prevent unnecessary tear out and reconstruction in homes throughout our area. You can always count on the fast response and the sophisticated equipment like this from our SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn team. Give our crew a call anytime at (718) 522-4400.

We Are The Crew To Call If Your Brooklyn Home Experiences A Flood

We work to help our neighbors return their residences to a clean, dry condition so they can get on with their lives.

Removing Damage And Restoring Brooklyn Homes After A Flood

Brooklyn is the most populated borough in NYC, and why would anyone want to live anywhere else? With the Upper Bay as our western border, however, flooding is occasionally an issue for many of us.

To remediate the effects of flood damage in Brooklyn, SERVPRO technicians pay close attention to the walls and other places where water collects and remains after the flood retreats, and we remove standing water. Quick removal helps to eliminate further damage and reduces the effects where damage already started.

Response team members quickly remove furniture outside for cleaning, but efforts inside center around replacement or restoration. As an example, interior walls often absorb much water, but can still be restored to a clean, usable condition.

SERVPRO technicians start by removing floor trim and drilling holes into drywall to release standing water. If the drilling shows that an affected panel is already crumbling or it cracks upward, then it absorbed too much moisture and required replacement. Team members then carefully break up the damaged panels, bag them, and remove them for proper disposal.

If there is no cracking or crumbling, then we take steps to dry each panel and the space behind them. For the exterior, this means directing an air mover to generate warm, dry air over the surface that carefully forces out moisture, so it evaporates into the air.

For the interior, our technicians use another air mover with an attached hose to force air into the wall cavity. That helps to dry the panel and the wall frame where it is attached. One of our inspectors uses a moisture meter to check that everything is back to a normal level and then team members patch the holes and reattach the floor trim.

For SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn, it is not really about customers. We work to help our neighbors return their residences to a clean, dry condition so they can get on with their lives. If this situation includes your home, call us at (718) 522-4400 today to find out what we can do for you.

The Ultimate Guide to Fire Damage Remediation in Brooklyn

4/30/2019 (Permalink)

If this fire damage happens to your apartment contact SERVPRO for fire damage remediation assistance.

Fire Odor Containment for Your Brooklyn Apartment

With the multiple effects that could follow a fire loss incident in your Brooklyn apartment, many owners can quickly determine when the situation is out of their control and skillset to repair and restore. Our professionals have an immediate response to fire emergencies and disasters, arriving with the full measure of our broad inventory of recovery equipment and advanced tools to help overcome the damaging effects of fire in your high-rise apartment. We strive to not only protect your unit in times like these, but understand the importance of acting quickly to protect other properties sharing common walls, floors, or ceilings.

Even without substantial structural concerns from the fire damage in your Brooklyn property, other effects can keep families from moving past the incident. Fire odors are among the most common effects that properties experience after a disaster, even if the flames get quickly extinguished by first responders or fire suppression tools or systems within the property. The lingering odor after a fire can continue to spread from the ignition source throughout the unit, even permeating materials to affect neighboring properties, until the appropriate measures get taken by professional restorers like our SERVPRO team.

We have multiple tools that can be vital in the containment of fire odors, and instrumental in beginning to address their severity throughout a damaged property. Our hydroxyl and ozone generators work to pull affected air through an onboard HEPA filter, which can simultaneously address airborne concerns like soot and smoke particulates, but also prevent odors from moving beyond these machines.

UV and thermal fogging equipment ultimately remove harsh lingering odors most effectively and is an ideal tool for fire loss recovery because of its diversity. The machine is good for open area odors, soft fabrics and materials, and even harder surfaces holding smoke and fire odors within pores.

While odors might only be one facet of the fire loss effects to overcome after an incident, our SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn team remains equipped to get your property through every phase of restoration after a damaging fire emergency. Give us a call anytime at (718) 522-4400.

How Our Experts Handle Structural Issues After A Flood In Your Brooklyn Home

4/17/2019 (Permalink)

To restore your flood-damaged structure to preloss state, call SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn.

Addressing Structural Issues After Flood Damage In Brooklyn

Flooding incidents in Brooklyn damage structures in many ways depending on how they unfold. Incidents from severe weather events such as storms leave widespread damages because the wind may blow out roofs or other parts of the structure creating more ways for water to breach. Flooding from rising water only dumps significant amounts of contaminated water in the structure necessitating advanced cleanup and controlled demolition of some sections.

Boarding up and installing tarps after flood damage in Brooklyn helps prevent unnecessary damages. To do this properly requires initial inspection of the entire property to identify all breaches. Our SERVPRO technicians rely on their skills in building services to do such inspections and board up affected areas. Besides, we also use plastic sheets to cover contents or parts in the interior of the structure where necessary.

Flooding affects building materials such as insulation and drywall. Some types of insulation such as Cellulose and Rockwool mat when wet losing R-value and fire resistance. Cellulose insulation loses its antimicrobial properties while Rockwool rusts because of its metallic properties. Our SERVPRO technicians make flood cuts to ease removal of the wet insulation and other structural materials because leaving them in place would compromise the energy efficiency of the structure or cause other problems such as microbial growth.

Porous materials in the structure such as carpets, wooden floors, and even frames absorb water during the flooding incident and can cause problems if left unchecked. Our SERVPRO technicians remove highly porous materials such as carpet and pad since it is not possible to clean all traces of contamination from the floodwaters. We clean up other materials such as frames and floors using professional cleaning agents and equipment such as pressure washers to get rid of all soiling. ASD, Applied Structural Drying, training helps ensure that we remove all excess moisture from affected materials to prevent problems such as rot and mold.

To restore your flood-damaged structure to preloss state, call SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn. You can reach us at (718) 522-4400 any time. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Are Flood Odors Leaving Their Calling Cards at your Brooklyn Business?

Flooding leaves offensive odors. SERVPRO has the equipment and expertise to remove those odors.

A Speedy Resolution to Commercial Water Damage in Brooklyn

When we talk about water issues in your commercial property, we are talking about both the impact of moisture on furnishings as well as microbial damage. All moisture carries microbes which can produce unpleasant odors. In older commercial properties structural contents like blinds or carpets can carry pre-existing issues like grime buildup or mold. Exposure to moisture can loosen embedded grime producing further unpleasant odors. We work closely with commercial properties in this community to restore property damages quickly and efficiently.

The team members that work repairing commercial water damage in Brooklyn businesses are highly trained professionals with certificates in a range of remediation areas. These certificates include water repair technicians (WRT), applied structural drying (ASD) and odor control technicians (OCT). Depending on the breadth and scale of your requirements, we can send a unit with the correct qualifications to restore your property to a safe working environment for both staff and customers.

The ability to mobilize equipment is a crucial aspect of restoring a commercial business. At SERVPRO we rely mainly on truck-mounted extraction units for drying a property. These machines are capable of removing excess quantities of water from both soft and hard flooring by combining vacuum power with a heating element. They are up to a thousand times more efficient than merely placing dehumidifiers and rapid air movers.

A priority for your staff and customers is likely to be odor control. In older commercial properties, water can exacerbate pre-existing issues like minor mold growth causing unpleasant smells. Often, these smells depart once the property is dry. However, when that is not the case, SERVPRO can use industrial grade fogging equipment to deodorize the job site and neutralize unpleasant odor thoroughly.

Getting your business back to a habitable state for your staff and customers is what we specialize in, contact SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn at (718) 522-4400.

Preventive Action and Cleanup of a Failed Water Heater

3/13/2019 (Permalink)

Perform regular maintenance to your water heater

When the valve on your water heater fails or the unit springs a leak, you could literally have gallons of water flooding that level of your home in minutes. If the leaking water heater is not in the basement you run the further risk of your home sustaining water damage in the walls and ceilings below that from seepage. Here are some ways to prevent or mitigate water damage from a failed water heater in Park Slope, NY.

1. Perform Regular Maintenance

In the event you are hearing unusual noises from your water heater, such as popping or thumping, it could be caused by mineral buildup on the inside of the tank or on the element. Cleaning out your water heater to remove mineral sediment is a good idea. Be sure to follow your unit’s manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance regularly to help prevent such a disaster from occurring.

2. Make Needed Repairs

If cleaning out and other maintenance measures don’t stop the problem, and especially if a leaking water heater accompanies the noises, your best bet would be to call a plumbing service to come take a look and a listen in case action is needed. Repairs can often stave off problems.

3. Quick Cleanup

When all preventive measures fail and a broken water heater floods your home, it is imperative to stop the leak as quickly as possible by shutting off the water supply. The next most crucial step is removing the water and mitigating the damage water can cause to your home.

The mess and damage can feel overwhelming. Call a water damage repair specialist in Park Slope, NY, to come as soon as possible and help with the cleanup process. They will use powerful extraction equipment to remove as much water as possible and then assess the damage and help with the salvage and repair process. A broken or heavily leaking water heater can be intimidating but with help, you will see your way through.

Why Mold Grows in Homes

3/4/2019 (Permalink)

Mold growth can occur in 24-72 hours

The air in your home in Brooklyn, NY, is full of mold spores. They travel inside on pets, clothing, shoes, and bags. The spores are invisible to the naked eye, so you may not even realize they are present unless you see black mold growing on a wall or smell an odor that gives it away. There are several elements that contribute to mold growth as well as preventative measures you can take to protect your home.

Causes of Mold Growth

The main culprit in fungus growth is moisture. There are several reasons excess moisture may be present in your house:

  • Water damage from leaks
  • Humidity level higher than 50%
  • Condensation from windows or HVAC system
  • Spoiled food

The mold cleanup process should not only include mitigating the problem itself but also addressing the circumstances that made it possible, to begin with. Mold remediation specialists are trained to handle both mold growth and water damage so that the problem does not return.

Prevention of Mold Growth

Once you pinpoint the issues in your home that are most likely to cause black mold growth, it becomes easier to prevent it. Monitor humidity levels regularly. Inspect your home frequently for leaks, and have any problem that could result in water damage fixed as soon as possible. Make sure your windows, roof, basement and other areas vulnerable to leaks or flooding are in good condition. Store food properly and throw out food that has expired. These tasks may seem time-consuming, but they're a small commitment compared to having to deal with a mold problem.

The best way to prevent the mold spores in the air of your home from becoming the black mold growth on your wall is to control moisture. Adopting the proper vigilance needed to protect your home can save you a lot of time and effort in the long run.

Pretesting and Water Classification: Making the Claims Process More Accurate

2/18/2019 (Permalink)

Black water is contaminated and dangerous.

Pretesting And Water Classification

As an insurance agent in the Brooklyn, NY area, it is your job to move the claims process forward. However, it is also necessary that claims are accurate assessments of the damage sustained to a property. Pretesting water damage can help you deliver an accurate insurance claim.

1. Water Categorization

Water categorization refers to the type of water and its level of contamination. There are three categories.

  • Category 1 – White Water

White water is considered clean water. It comes from a sanitary source, but prolonged standing could lead to contamination from other sources.

  • Category 2 – Gray Water

Gray water is contaminated water. This water presents as a darker color and likely has unsafe levels of chemical and biological matter. Avoid contact with the skin and do not consume as it may make you ill.

  • Category 3 – Black Water

Black water is contaminated and dangerous. This water is likely contaminated with sewage and other toxic chemicals. Contact or consumption could cause serious illness or disease.

2. Category Classification

Pretesting will also provide a classification to the damage. Each category and level require different restoration and mitigation practices which effects price. There are four classifications.

  • Class 1

Class 1 water damage means minimal exposure. This means that water is affecting a small area of a room and that there is minimal absorption into the surrounding materials.

  • Class 2

Class 2 water damage involves an entire room and a lot of water absorption into surrounding materials. This level also involves affected structural materials.

  • Class 3

Class 3 water damage involves the highest level of water absorption. This level of damage typically requires significant repair or replacement of all materials in the space.

  • Class 4

Class 4 is more related to drying times than water damage. This level involves specialty drying equipment and times due to deep pockets of saturation.

Pretesting provides an overview of the damage inflicted on a property. The higher the category and classification level the more extensive the repair. Therefore, testing the water before a restoration provides an accurate picture and price point for the claim being made.

Does Your Business Need Commercial Flood Insurance?

2/11/2019 (Permalink)

Ask your insurance agent if you are covered

Your businesses in Park Slope, NY, is not covered under a standard commercial insurance policy if it is affected by flooding. However, you can purchase special coverage for flooding in case your company ever does withstand any flood damage. Here’s some basic information on flood insurance and whether or not you will need to purchase it for your business.

Flood Insurance Coverage

If flooding in your area causes damage to your business, you will likely need to contact a water damage cleanup company to restore the damaged building and get you back in business. Without flood insurance, the cost to fix all the damages and replace any lost items will rest on your shoulders. By protecting your business with coverage in the case of a flood, the costs up to $500,000 will be taken care of in almost all situations including

  • Heavy rain
  • Overflowing rivers
  • Snow melt
  • Storm surge
  • Broken dams
  • Blocked storm drains

Your business will also be covered for any mold damage that occurs as a result of the flooding. Any property outside your company’s business will not be covered, and you will not be compensated for money loss due to time lost during the restoration process.

Insurance Requirements in High-Risk Areas

If you don’t live in a high-risk flood area, it will be up to you to determine the risk of flooding in your area. While areas close to flood zones would be smart to look into adding flooding to their insurance policy, businesses located in areas identified as high-risk flood areas with a mortgage from an insured or federally regulated lender are the only locations required by law to purchase an extra flood insurance policy.

Flood insurance is very useful for covering the costs of damage that occurs to your business as a result of a flood. Although it is only required for businesses in high-risk areas, you should evaluate whether your building could be at risk.

They're sometimes hard to recognize, but it doesn't take much of a leak to cause a gas fire. These home disasters are all too common. Fortunately, you can avoid a fire or worse by recognizing signs of a leak:

  •  A hissing or whistling sound near the line
  •  The smell of rotten eggs or sulfur
  •  Bubbles in the water
  •  Dead houseplants
  •  Visible dust near the gas line
  •  Damage to the gas pipe

Family members or pets may show signs of a natural gas leak, as well. These may include nosebleeds, reduced appetites, nausea, mood changes, irritation to the eyes and throats, disorientation, and breathing difficulties.

Keep Your Family and Home Safe

2. Do Not Flip Switches

Simply flipping the light switch to on or off could make a spark that causes a gas explosion. Instead, use a flashlight for any other actions you take in the house. Don't use the phone inside the house, either. In fact, don't use lighters, candles, or anything else that could ignite.

3. Ventilate the Home

Open all the windows and doors, so fresh air can come in and gas will move out of the house. Don't worry about taking any steps further than this. Instead, wait to contact emergency or fire remediation professionals when you and your family are safely outside.

4. Go Outside

Get everyone outside and go across the street. From this safe distance, call 911 or the appropriate authorities.

Learn as much as you can about what may cause a gas fire and how to avoid them to keep your family safe. Teach your family about natural gas and how to stay safe if they suspect a gas leak.

What To Know About Mold Damage and Your Insurance

Call your agent to find out if you are covered

Mold Damage And Your Insurance

If you’ve discovered mold damage in your rented Brooklyn, NY, home, you may be wondering if your rental insurance policy will cover the damage and remediation. The answer to this depends both on your policy and the damage type.

1. How Insurance for Renters Works

Renters insurance policies typically cover the personal property of the renter, while the landlord’s insurance covers the structure. Most policies include coverage for damages caused by an emergency situation, such as fire or flood, and any damage resulting from those situations. They may also cover damages caused by accident or nature up to the point when the resident has had reasonable time to discover and fix the problem. Most insurance policies will not cover damages resulting from neglect.

2. What Mold Damages May Be Covered

Your rental insurance may have provisions for mold removal and remediation if the mold growth is caused by an emergency, such as water from a fire hose, nature, or an accidental pipe break, among similar situations. In many cases, they may also cover the costs for hiring a mold remediation professional.

3. What Renters Are Responsible For

In most cases, renters are responsible for reporting any mold removal needs as soon as they realize there’s a problem. Mold damage to a renter's personal property also falls to them, while damage to the actual property may be covered by the landlord’s policy. In many cases, renters insurance may require the renter to do everything they reasonably can in order to report and remedy the mold problem. The renter is also responsible for having insurance and knowing what the policy contains.

In most cases, a rental insurance policy will cover damage up to the point where the renter could have prevented it from getting any worse. This means that as soon as damage is found, appropriate steps should be taken to stop the infestation and prevent further spread. In some cases, your policy may even cover the cost of professional cleaning.

Common Questions When You Fill Out a Claim for Water Damage

When the cold hits, your Park Slope, NY, home could be facing issues with bursting pipes. Fortunately, your insurance policy can help. Here are a few of the common questions people have with filing a claim for water damage.

1. What Damage is Covered?

When it comes to damage caused by water in your home, several causes may be covered by your insurance. Sudden damages such as sewer back up, an accidental break in the plumbing, storm caused damage, or flooding are all instances insurance companies usually cover. Gradual damage which occurs over time is usually considered neglect on the part of the homeowner and will most likely not be covered. This is why it’s important to conduct any repairs as soon as water caused damage is found.

2. What Other Services May Be Covered?

Your insurance provider may also include coverage for the cost of hiring a professional cleanup and restoration service to help restore your home. These professionals can assess the damage and formulate a plan for repair and restoration. Your insurance company may also be able to help you contact a plumbing professional who can help fix broken pipe issues in your home to help prevent further problems with bursting pipes.

3. What Things Can You Do?

Aside from fixing any damage you find as soon as you can, there are a few things a homeowner can do to help the insurance process. The first is to understand your policy, and what it covers and does not cover. It may also be helpful to conduct a home maintenance check regularly and maintain a record of all your home repairs.

If you’ve had issues with bursting pipes, it’s important to know what type of water damage your policy covers. Your policy may also offer coverage for the costs of hiring professionals to help restore your home after the damage occurs. Remember, it’s important to know what's in your policy when filing a claim.

Security Fencing: Keeping Your Property Safe After a Fire

1/9/2019 (Permalink)

Security Fencing

Many property owners may wonder why a security fence is put up after a disaster, especially when so much of the property has already been damaged or destroyed. The simple answer is to mitigate further loss and to comply with most insurer requirements. However, fencing also helps to reduce liability risks and ensure a safe and controlled environment for the restoration process.

1. Looting and Vandalism

The main concerns after a commercial property fire are looting and vandalism. This type of disaster can create several access points for potential criminals, and without the proper preventative measures, an insurer can dismiss the losses as owner neglect.

2. Squatting or Trespassing

Additionally, a security fence not only prevents criminal activity, but it also minimizes the risk of any type of trespassing, even squatting. When your business has been shut down, the last thing you want is rebuilding to be slowed down because of people attempting to live in your building.

3. Wildlife

Beyond people, both criminal and destitute, a fence can reduce the chances of wildlife trampling through your property and causing more damage. Granted, the safety perimeter may not keep birds out, but it may keep larger animals at bay while your property is cleaned and restored.

4. Further Damage

Fencing in combination with a full-scale board-up is meant to mitigate further damage and reduce liability concerns for insurers. Damage can be caused by people, animals and Mother Nature, which is why you should contact a disaster restoration specialist in the Brooklyn, NY, area to perform both of these services and keep your property safe.

A security fence is only part of the fire mitigation and restoration puzzle, but it is necessary. Without a secure perimeter, you risk criminal trespass, squatting and even wildlife intruders. Keep your building safe and fence off the boundary or hire a skilled and experienced professional to help you.

Small Business Claims: Knowing Your Coverage

12/31/2018 (Permalink)

Your commercial property in Bay Ridge,NY, must be insured for many reasons. The building could sustain damage, or someone could get hurt when they visit. Something as simple as a pipe break could become a major expense without the right coverage. It’s important to understand your insurance package so that you know when you have the right to file a business claim.

Exclusions

One thing you want to pay particular attention to is what your property insurance doesn’t cover. Water damage can happen as the result of many different situations:

• Leaky pipes
• Inclement weather
• Flooding
• Sewer damage

The problems caused by some of these incidents and the water remediation services required to fix them are likely to be covered by your standard property policy. However, flooding or secondary damage such as mold may need a separate add-on to keep you fully insured. Your business claim may also be denied if the damage is the result of neglect or improper maintenance.

Maintenance

Avoiding water damage in your building often comes down to how well you take care of your property. You can minimize your risk of leaks due to weather by keeping gutters and downspouts clean throughout the year. Don’t put off roof repairs. Have your roof inspected regularly so that you can fix problems that lead to leaks. As the weather gets colder, make sure your pipes are well-insulated, particularly if they are near exterior walls. It's hard to imagine the pain a person feels after a fire, be it fire in a business or fire in a home. It's important to assess the extent of fire damage before calling the fire damage restoration company. Fire damage can be in the form of soot damage, smoke damage, and soot damage. One of them is calling fire cleanup professionals to perform the fire cleanup process and restore the home or place of business to its previous state. • Do not turn on electrical appliances — stereos, TVs, computers, etc. — before the professional fire cleanup technicians assess them properly.
  • Do not consume canned foods or any other food items exposed to heat during the fire.
Stay away from the upholstered furniture or heavy carpeting affected by debris or heavy smoke residue.
  • Do not attempt to wipe or wash smoke or soot from absorbent surfaces such as ceilings and walls.

After the fire truck leaves, the reality of the situation settles in. Property owners may be tempted to rush in and try to salvage some of their property. Let the professional fire restoration company do what they do best.

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

The Truth About Bleach and Mold

12/28/2018 (Permalink)

Technician removing moldy material from the home.

For many households, chlorine bleach is generally seen as your “go-to” cleaner for tough jobs.  While bleach is well-known for its disinfecting properties that doesn't mean it's the best choice for mold - it has distinct drawbacks when cleaning flood impacted buildings.

It is a convenient cleaner and stain remover for hard, non-porous surfaces. Bleach is not made to “soak in”, therefore, its disinfecting properties are limited to a hard surface like tile or glass. If used on porous materials, such as wood and drywall, bleach will stay above the surface and only kill the mold on the surface, while the water is absorbed in.

The surface mold looks gone, but the fact is, if the mold is not removed from the material, it will most likely return and make your mold problem worse in the long run. Mold remediation requires a cleaner to reach deep down into wood and other porous building materials.

Further, its effectiveness in killing bacteria and mold is significantly reduced when it comes in contact with residual dirt, which is often present in flooded homes. If bleach water comes into contact with electrical components and other metal parts of mechanical systems it can cause corrosion. Bleach water can also compromise the effectiveness of termite treatments in the soil surrounding the building.

SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn cares about the proper restoration of your home or business.  We have the know-how and the specialized equipment needed to assess and/or repair your damage.

Do Not Learn About Frozen Pipes the Hard Way

12/17/2018 (Permalink)

You may end up with water damage due to frozen pipes in your Brooklyn home

If you get deep, winter freezes in Brooklyn, NY, you’re probably already an expert. You know what areas of your home are the most susceptible. You know what to do in those areas to prevent pipe and water damage. Your action plan is in place. When the meteorologists warn of a hard freeze, you are ready,
Every action plan has some common elements.

  • Turn on all faucets so that they are just trickling. The theory is that moving water doesn’t freeze.
  • Expose your pipes to warmth. Open cupboards and closet doors. If possible, warm up pipes in uninsulated areas.
  • Closely monitor your home. Make sure the faucets continue trickling. Be ready to act in the event of a problem.

Despite your best efforts, there may still be situations where you end up with damage due to frozen pipes.

When They Break, Follow These Steps

  1. Put a bucket under the leak and shut off the water. There should be a shutoff that controls the flow of water into that pipe. Turn that shutoff immediately or, to be safe, shut off the main.

  2. Eliminate the standing water as quickly as possible. A wet vac works well in this situation. If you caught the leak quickly, a little do-it-yourself cleanup would do the job. If the water damage is substantial, consider bringing in flood remediation specialists to address the problem.

  3. Fix the broken pipe. First, be sure that the pipe is no longer frozen. Repair it if your plumbing skills are up to it. Patch it if you have the materials and a bit of know-how. Otherwise, call your plumber or that friend who knows how to do everything.

If You Are Vigilant and Prepared, Frozen Pipes Are Only a Nuisance

When the temperature plummets, follow your action plan. If you still end up with a problem, be ready to minimize the damage and make repairs. All that stands between a small problem and a catastrophe is you.

Will Renters Insurance Cover Fire Damage?

12/17/2018 (Permalink)

Apartment fire in Park Slope,NY

Renters insurance can cover several expenses associated with a fire in a rented apartment or house. Most policies provide at least some property, liability and loss of use coverage. The amount of coverage may vary. Learn more about what this type of insurance may cover before reviewing the terms of your policy.

Renter's Property

A renter's policy should cover any losses a renter suffers due to a fire. This coverage is limited to the contents inside of an apartment or home and does not extend to the building materials or structure. There are several factors to consider:

  • Does the policy cover replacement cost?
  • Does the policy cover actual cash value?
  • What are the limits?

The best renters insurance policies will cover fire restoration or replacement costs. The actual cash value of electronics or furniture may not be sufficient to restore or replace damaged items.

Liability

Most policies also include a limited amount of liability coverage. This coverage may extend to:

  • Negligence resulting in an accidental fire
  • Injuries to third parties
  • Third-party property damage

In addition to these types of liability coverage, some coverage for medical payments to others may also be available. This is usually a small amount of no-fault coverage.

Loss of Use

Most policies also provide coverage for loss of use. This coverage will kick in if a rental property is uninhabitable, and may be used to offset:

  • Additional living expenses
  • Temporary relocation costs
  • Other necessities

Be sure to review the terms of a renters insurance policy to determine how much coverage will be available in each of these areas. The property owner will need to assess damage and arrange for fire damage mitigation and restoration. If a fire breaks out in a rental property in Park Slope, NY, contact the fire department as soon as possible and notify both the property owner and your insurance provider.

Mold Mitigation: Protecting Your Income Property From Water Damage

11/30/2018 (Permalink)

Water and mold damage in Greenpoint,NY

Mold Mitigation

One of the scariest things for any property owner is water showing up where it doesn’t belong because it typically signifies greater issues or concerns. For income property owners that concern is twofold because they are worried about the health of the property and the welfare of their tenants, especially as water damage can lead to mold growth. Mold prevention, however, is a simple process that can be implemented in any property.

1. Air Flow and Ventilation

Mold growth requires moisture, and moisture thrives in closed off humid locations. Therefore, to mitigate the potential threat of mold, you should ensure that there is sufficient airflow and ventilation throughout your property by installing vented appliances, air conditioning and dehumidifiers.

2. Waterproofing and Roof Repair

Two of the main culprits for water damage are roof damage and poor seals around plumbing, windows and foundations. Performing annual roof inspections can pinpoint many problems, like missing shingles, damaged flashing and gutter issues, before they lead to leaks in the home. Additionally, checking the interior of basements and windows after storms for water can help you pinpoint any sealant issues.

3. Landscape Grading

Improper grading of landscaping can lead to water buildup in your property’s basement, which can lead to the development of mold, especially if the basement isn’t sealed correctly. Try to ensure that all landscaping is graded away from the house and toward external sewers.

4. Mold Resistant Products

Beyond preventing moisture damage, you can install mold resistant products, like mold-resistant Sheetrock and drywall or paint with mold inhibitors. These products offer hard exterior coatings or chemical composition that make water absorption impossible and therefore mold growth impossible as well. For more information on mold-resistant products and possible installation, you can contact a local mold remediation specialist in the Greenpoint, NY, area.

Water damage can lead to the development of mold, but for vigilant property managers and owners, who take mold prevention seriously, it doesn’t have to be too concerning. By ensuring proper ventilation, structural integrity and adequate landscape grading of your property, you can alleviate both your tenants and your own concerns.

  • Electronics
  • Furniture

The Snow Miser is Real: Protecting Your Home This Winter Season

Protect your home in Greenpoint,NY from winter storm

Protecting Your Home This Winter Season

A winter storm can produce beautiful scenery in its wake, and it can be easy to overlook the level of damage that is sustained when overwhelmed by the snowglobe-like appeal. However, as a homeowner, it is essential to remedy any potential threats before they cause significant structural damage.

1. Avoid an Indoor Blizzard

A blizzard belongs outside of your home, but with the combination of strong winds and ice, it is possible that the storm may end up overwhelming your property inside and out. Blizzards have a reputation for blowing open doors or even sending ice chunks through windows, and when no one is around this can lead to interior water damage. Invest in durable storm doors and windows to help prevent this type of loss.

2. Prevent Potential Roof Collapse

Living in Greenpoint, NY, it is not uncommon for a winter storm to unload significant amounts of snow, and while that may not be an issue for people with a steep roofline or metal shingles, others may experience significant roof damage and possibly even collapse. Thankfully there are tools and other solutions to prevent snow buildup on your roof.

  • Roof Rakes
  • Heating cables
  • Calcium chloride tablets

3. Ensure You’re Using Snow Removal Equipment Properly

While winter can cause several problems for your home, damaging your property in the process of removing snow is not unheard of. Snow blowers are powerful machines, and when chutes are not correctly controlled that machine can send ice hurling through the air and your beautiful bay window.

4. Have Assistance on Speed Dial

While there are many ways to prevent storm damage in the winter, no method is foolproof. It can be a good idea to have the contact information of emergency restoration services in your area. Additionally, it may be worthwhile to customize an emergency response plan as a precautionary measure.

A winter storm is easy to overlook as a threat because inside you are removed from the immediate danger, but that snow and those winds can be detrimental to the structure of your home. Therefore, to avoid damage, invest in precautionary tools and solutions and always have a backup plan.

1. Safeguard Your Building

When high winds threaten to damage your business, there are precautions you can take to protect your building. Before storm season, you can invest in storm shutters to protect against flying debris. Additionally, if a hurricane is approaching, you can anchor large furniture, elevate fragile equipment, and even place sandbags around the property to prevent flooding.

Hurricane damage is a threat to more than the physical environment. As a business owner, you may want to create backups for essential documents and compile a list of emergency contacts in case operations need to shut down. Additionally, you may want to invest in waterproof containers for any paper files or store hard copies and backups in an off-site locale.

The Cost of Flood Damage: 3 Factors To Consider

10/11/2018 (Permalink)

Flooded basement in a Brooklyn, NY home

Flooding can come from a variety of sources, from overflowing washing machines and toilets to storms, and can affect your Brooklyn, NY, home in several ways. You may be looking at a large damage repair bill in the aftermath. Understanding what might impact the total cost can help you plan a budget and avoid financial surprises that could put you deep into debt.

1. The Size of the Flood

Because each flooding event is different, considering the size of the one you are dealing with can help you estimate the cost of repairs. For example, if poor drainage and a few rainy days result in basement water that is more than a foot deep, you may have to rent a sump pump to remove it. Smaller floods can be cheaper to remedy, but if mold develops afterward, you may have to call in a flood damage and mold removal company to handle it properly.

2. The Condition of the Water

As you try to estimate your flood damage repair bill, keep in mind that the condition of the water may affect how simple the cleanup will be. If the flood came from an outdoor source, such as an overflowing stream or creek, then cleanup technicians will likely label the water a category 3 or “black water” situation. This water could contain human and animal feces, chemical waste and other toxins that make it potentially hazardous to handle without professional assistance.

3. The Damage to Your Home’s Interior

It can be difficult to gauge the cost of the damage caused by the average flood because it may depend on where the water entered your home and the depth it reached. For instance, a basement flood may be less damaging than one from a large storm-fueled flood that affected the main floor of your home and its contents.

Flood damage repair costs can depend on several factors when water invades your Brooklyn, NY, home. Understanding each of these factors can help you prepare a budget and stay on track with what needs to be done to restore your home.

Don’t Flush Your Savings down the Drain: Understanding Sewer Backups and Homeowner Claims

9/16/2018 (Permalink)

The rainy season in flood zones can produce a lot of anxiety for homeowners. Especially, when you consider that basic home insurance policies may not cover damage incurred by a sewer backup, meaning that if sewage starts spilling over your toilet, contaminating and damaging your home, you may be left footing the bill; however, even if your policy covers backups, there are still some things that you should understand.

1. Understand the Potential Causes of a Backup

A sewage backup typically doesn’t happen without reason, and sometimes these reasons are things you have control over. For instance, one of the main causes of a backup is a blockage in the line due to roots. Shrubs, bushes, trees can produce roots that are dense enough to break through your sewer lines, clogging the pipes and ultimately causing a backup.

2. Understand Common Prevention Tactics

Understanding how a sewer backup occurs enables you to perform preventative maintenance. For instance, you can ensure that no trees or shrubs are encroaching in areas where the waste lines run. You can also ensure that you dispose of things like grease and paper properly, and you can install a backwater prevention valve.

3. Understand the Cleanup Process

In the unfortunate event that you experience a sewage backup, you should familiarize yourself with the cleanup process, which includes a lot of wet vacuuming, mopping, disinfecting, and any other contaminant removal. However, it may be a good idea to call in restoration specialists to assist you in this process, and it will likely be a requirement by any insurance coverage you may have.

4. Understand the Process of Filing a Claim

Most insurance companies expect certain things when clients file claims. For instance, you should have before and after photos of the damaged area. You should itemize a list of property that was damaged or lost. And, you should contact your insurance representative immediately. It is also a good idea to save any receipts related to any restoration work.

Nobody wants to experience a sewer backup, but if you are in Brooklyn, NY, it is necessary to understand the basics and to know what your homeowner policy covers.

Preventing Water Damage on Your Construction Site

9/16/2018 (Permalink)

If you own a construction company, you know that there are many things that could go awry during the construction process. One of those issues is potential water damage. At any stage of construction, you may discover you need water pipe repair or a better drainage system. The weather may even play a role. Here are some common ways that water damage could happen on your construction site in Brooklyn, NY, and how to either avoid or fix them.

Poor Drainage

Water needs a place to go, and if you don't direct it to where you want it to be, you could have a bad situation on your hands. If drainage pipes get clogged or there's more water than space to move it to, you could end up with a flooded site. There are a few ways to ensure proper drainage:

• Keep soil around the site graded
• Set up barriers, such as sandbags, around the perimeter
• Install screens on your drains to filter out debris
• Designate a specific place for water to drain

Poorly Installed Piping

A badly installed or poorly fitted pipe could lead to the inevitable need for water pipe repair. If the pipes leak, you may have a soppy mess at best and possibly water damage in the building. The site manager should inspect the pipes before water is pumped through them and sign off on their use.

Inclement Weather

A broken pipe isn't the only thing that can cause large leaks. Buildings under construction are particularly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions because they are open and exposed. You can install temporary roofs to shield the building from harm.

Material Storage

Just like the interior of your building, your materials should be protected, too. Store them in a separate, waterproof shed or inside the building on a raised platform under a tarp. This protects the materials from water that comes from above or below.

Whether your flooding stems from a need for water pipe repair, better drainage or sunnier weather, it can be just as expensive to remedy as a finished building. Plan ahead to protect your construction site from water damage.

When Renters Insurance Will and Will Not Cover Mold Damage

9/11/2018 (Permalink)

Ceiling Mold Damage

Instead of asking whether or not rental insurance covers mold damage, you should consider rephrasing the question to "Does renters' insurance cover mildew damage or mold remediation?" Phrased like this, you have a better idea of what to look for when perusing your renters' insurance policy. During your review, you should look for the following items:

• Exclusions
• Duty to mitigate
• Mold caused by a covered peril

Within each of these sections, you should find information regarding what type of damage is and is not covered.

Exclusions

Typically, the limits on mildew damage in a rental insurance policy are relatively low, at right around $5,000. This should be enough to cover the cost of damage. If the damage is more than $5,000, the insurance company might assume that the damage was present for a while and that you failed to mitigate it in time.

Duty To Mitigate

If the mold was present before you moved in, or if it’s a result of an inherent defect with the property, then mold removal is likely the landlord's responsibility. However, if the damage was caused by a covered peril, and if it could have been stopped from spreading, the insurance company may only cover it up to the point where you should have known about it. For instance, if the damage was caused by a leaky pipe, and if you knew about the leaky pipe but failed to inform your landlord of it so he or she could make the repair, damage caused to your belongings may not be covered.

Mold Caused by a Covered Peril

If the mold damage was caused by, say, the water from a hose used to put out a fire, and if fire is covered under your policy, then the damage should be covered by your policy. However, you likely must prove that you made a good faith effort to prevent the damage from becoming worse.

If you discover mold on your rental property, reach out to the mold remediation experts in Brooklyn, NY, to discuss remediation options. The experts can also help you examine your rental insurance policy and determine whether or not the damage is covered.

Who Is Responsible for Apartment Rental Fire Repair?

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

Brooklyn apartment fire damage can a complete loss

There is plenty to worry about when renting out apartments to tenants. Liability is often a major concern when renting out living spaces in Brooklyn, NY. By being knowledgeable of liability for an apartment fire, you can plan ahead when an unexpected fire strikes your property.

What If the Fire Is Due to Disrepair?

As the landlord, the building’s general upkeep is an obligation. Whenever the building burns down due to an unpreventable accident, commercial insurance comes into play to treat the fire damage. When a fire is due to neglecting upkeep on electrical systems or failing to fix a problem brought to your attention, you are additionally liable in other damages to the tenant:

• Damaged possessions
• Wage loss
• Temporary living arrangements
• Any additional damages claimed against you

When an insurance claim is filed, it’ll be inspected for a root cause. If it is proven to be due to failure to keep the building safe and habitable, the tenant is able to file a claim for damages. It’s helpful to take pictures and document anything you find as soon as it’s safe to enter after the apartment fire is contained. By doing so, you will have evidence to refute any future false claims.

What Is a Tenant Responsible For?

If the fire is determined to be no party’s fault, the tenant is responsible for replacing their own possessions. The landlord’s insurance still covers the building’s repair. The tenant’s risk for property loss can be alleviated by purchasing renters’ insurance beforehand.

If the tenant is discovered to have set the fire intentionally or due to gross negligence, he or she will be liable for both the building and possessions.

How Is the Damage Repaired?

After insurance is contacted, the next step is to seek out fire damage repair experts in the area. These companies use industrial machines to restore and replace damaged property. Regardless of liability, the damage can be treated. Knowledge of apartment fire liability allows you to assess and plan for where the bill is going to end up.

How To Stop Sewer Smells From Getting in Your Building

8/18/2018 (Permalink)

If a sewer smell permeates your commercial building in Brooklyn, NY, it can be bad for business morale. Not only will your workers hate coming in, but your customers might start to avoid the store too. Thankfully, you can turn to a commercial cleaning team to help you get rid of the bad smell.

However, you don't have to let it get that far. You can take some preventative steps to keep the bad smell of the sewer out of your building from the start.

1. Check on the toilet trap. You might not be that familiar with the function of your toilet trap. This u-shaped pipe connects your toilet's drain to the rest of the sewer line. The bend of the plumbing traps a small amount of waste water. The waste water actually works to block sewer gas from coming into your building. Have a plumber or another professional inspect the trap regularly to make sure it does not dry out.

2. Clean plumbing vents. Your building is probably equipped with plumbing vents designed to release sewer odors to the outside rather than back into your space. If these vents were to get blocked up by, you may start to notice a sewer smell inside. Regularly cleaning the vents helps reduce the chances of a blockage.

3. Inspect drain lines. The drain lines of your sinks and toilets are supposed to carry sewage away from your building. However, cracks and holes can form in this piping. When this happens, the sewage may release underneath your building or even inside of it. This backup can leave you with a smelly mess.

Proper maintenance and vigilance can help you keep your business from acquiring the feared sewer smell. If a sewage disaster does happen, you need to address the problem as quickly as possible to avoid a lingering smell on your property.

Why Dryer Vents Need Cleaning

7/21/2018 (Permalink)

Proper maintenance and Repairs can prevent future damages

When your dryer blows hot air on the tumbling clothes inside the barrel, the residual hot, humid blast is generally expelled through a hose attached to the back of the drying unit itself. The hose is then attached to a dryer vent that allows the hot breeze and fabric lint to move away from the clothes and out of your home. If the dryer lint accumulates in the vent and reduces the airflow needed for efficient use of the dryer, the heating element can overheat. Since lint is a highly combustible material, a lint fire can then easily start.

Startling Dryer Fire Statistics

Statistics show that clothes dryer fires are more common than most people may believe. In fact, improper cleaning of dryers is estimated to cost over $100 million each year. There are other surprising statistics:

• There are approximately 15,500 fires attributed to clothes dryer blazes each year.
• More than a dozen deaths result from dryer fires yearly.
• Clogged dry vents can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, which injures more than 200 people annually.

With the additional number of injuries caused by lint fire issues, it is easy to understand why dryer safety is important and considered a seriously neglected home maintenance routine.

Simple Signs of Clogged Dryer Vents

If you are worried that your dryer vent has become clogged, or if you haven’t cleaned the tube in over a year, there could be a problem with overheating. If the clothes feel overly hot at the end of their drying cycle, the vent could be blocked. Also, if you notice a burning smell while the dryer is running, the vent is probably full of lint. Moreover, when you see lint lying on the ground near the outside vent, the dryer air removal system may need cleaning.

Advantages of Proper Repair and Maintenance

If you do have a lint fire in Brooklyn, NY, you can call in a team of fire damage experts to get your home restored quickly. The professionals can also make sure your new dryer venting system is connected properly and expelling efficiently.

Two Ways To Prevent Mold’s Pungent Presence in Your Commercial Building

7/16/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Mold Damage

Believe it or not, mold can appear in even the cleanest commercial buildings in Brooklyn, NY. The fungus spores are spread by air currents and can easily move inside through open doors or windows. Once indoors, the spore waits for a small amount of moisture to awaken its growth potential. So, when a pipe breaks and causes water damage, or the humidity gets high, a mold colony can suddenly appear. As the fungus matures, it often produces a pungent yeasty smell to announce its presence. To prevent mold from growing in your commercial building, find the smell and fight back.

Mold Loves Dampness and Darkness

Mold can build a colony in as little as 48 hours if the area is dark and damp. Wet rags and mops hidden in a maintenance closet can be perfect breeding grounds for spores to take seed. Stacks of papers in storage rooms or basements can also develop mold colonies that produce a musty smell when the hot, humid summer days begin. Try these three tactics to prevent mold growth on wet items:

• Dry the fabrics out before storing.
• Store paper in a climate-controlled room.
• Regularly inspect storage areas for potential mold.

Mold Loves To Hide

If your building has experienced water damage from a broken pipe or an overflowing toilet, mold may be lurking inside walls or under cabinets. If tenants or clients begin complaining about a powerful, unpleasant odor in the restroom a week or two after the flood, you probably have a hidden fungus colony. Consider calling a professional mold removal team to assess the situation and remove the mold by cleaning and sanitizing the area.

Mold Can Be Stopped

Water damage and dark rooms can offer a perfect environment for mold growth. However, once you or your maintenance people learn to recognize the earthy, musty smell that proceeds mold growth, mold prevention can become almost second nature.

How To Avoid Water Damage in Your Home

6/25/2018 (Permalink)

Kitchen water damage in Brooklyn, New York

Owning a home comes with many responsibilities. When you have excess water in your home, you may have to call water restoration specialists to take care of problems caused by a broken pipe that went unnoticed. With regular maintenance and inspection, however, you can avoid extensive water damage by finding problems before they get to the point of causing damage.

General Issues

Any component of the plumbing system in your home in Brooklyn, NY, has the potential to cause problems if it breaks. When you inspect your home, there are several things to look for:

• A clogged shower, sink or toilet
• Drippy faucets
• Leaks under sinks
• A toilet that is constantly refilling, even when not being flushed

To avoid long-term issues with these problems, fix them right away. Replace valves and seals that are broken or faulty. Pay attention to your water bill, as a hidden leak could spike it considerably and cause excess water in your home, leaving you with a need for pipe cleanup. Look for corrosion or mold growth, and keep the humidity levels steady.

Appliance Care

Any appliance that uses water also needs regular maintenance to prevent a water damage situation. Old hoses and supply lines can form cracks. It is important to have a professional inspect your water heater every two years and perform regular maintenance. Other appliances, such as your washing machine, need to be at least three inches from a wall to keep hoses from being crowded and developing kinks that can lead to leaks. Replace kinked hoses that you find during your regular inspections.

HVAC Maintenance

Schedule regular maintenance of your HVAC system. Professionals can clean the coils and determine if any parts need to be replaced. Condensation on anything but a cooling suction line can cause water damage over time as it drips on the most convenient surface around it.

Water in your home can cause severe damage. You can circumvent many problems, however, simply by having a regular maintenance schedule.

How To Prevent Pesky Bird Roosting Problems

6/18/2018 (Permalink)

Birds can roost in your Commercial Business

Birds can be amazing animals, and your flighty friends are not generally considered parasites in Brooklyn, NY. In fact, they can often welcomed for their delightful songs and amazing colors. But sometimes the feathered mammals may not be wanted because what they often leave behind requires constant bird cleaning. When birds choose to nest in rooftops, inhabit building eaves, and contaminate entryways, commercial building owners may begin to consider them pests.

A Struggle

Although bird removal may sound easy, it can be a real struggle. As creatures of habit, birds typically like to nest in the same area year after year. So, hundreds of years ago communities began to fight back with simple creative art pieces. This often included:

• setting scarecrows in the fields
• placing moving objects on top of buildings
• using hanging, colorful, and noisy objects from eaves

People believed that by being proactive they could scare the birds away before nesting began. For the most part, it worked. Now modern pest control methods continue the age-old theme.

A Combination

Scientists specializing in ornithology suggest using a combination of three things to remove birds. They are:

• deterrent odors
• random noises
• arbitrary movement

The experts do warn, however, that birds can be intelligent creatures and can quickly assimilate to one or two warning methods. To create an effective deterrent, the hazing tactics can be routinely changed to continue to scare the birds away and prevent the building from needing further bird cleaning.

A Prevention

By using a rotating combination of irritating noises, unpleasant odors, flashing metallic strips, and replica statutes of predatory birds, the nesting troublemakers can be kept at bay with little problem. The trick is often to prevent them from nesting the first time, so the feather pests don’t get the urge to return to their nesting home.

A Removal

To help remove the mess birds have previously caused to the building, contact a team specializing in cleaning even the most difficult of bird cleaning messes. The dedicated team may also have information or products specifically designed to help deter birds in Brooklyn, NY.

3 Important Items To Keep in Your Business' Emergency Medical Kit

6/13/2018 (Permalink)

Keep a fully stocked First Aid kit available in your Brooklyn business

Keeping your employees and customers safe can be an important part of being a responsible Brooklyn, NY, business owner. Posting warning signs in dangerous areas and following state and federal safety protocol can help keep your property safe. However, if an accident should occur, being prepared with a stocked first aid kit might mean the difference between being able to help an injured individual and having to wait until help arrives. If you are creating a kit for the first time, there are several items you may want to include.

1. A Variety Pack of Bandages

Cuts and scrapes may heal more quickly when they are covered with a sterile bandage, and covering a wound may also reduce the risk of infection by preventing dirt and bacteria from contaminating injured skin. However, since it can be difficult to predict the size of a wound, it is a good idea to keep a variety pack of bandages, all in different sizes and shapes, in your medical kit. Consider keeping flexible bandages on hand to cover scrapes on knees and elbows that might be incurred in a fall.

2. Large Gauze Pads

Gauze pads can be effective in covering wounds and stemming the flow of blood from a wound. Having large pads on hand means you can fold them for thickness if necessary. It is wise to keep several large sheets of gauze, up to eight inches long and ten inches wide, in your first aid kit.

3. A Complete Directory of Emergency Numbers

You may have a list of emergency numbers posted in your office or in the breakroom. However, keeping a backup directory in your emergency kit can help you contact a storm damage cleanup service and other emergency repair numbers if your business floods and you cannot access the posted list. Consider laminating your backup list to protect it from water and staining.

Keeping a fully-stocked first aid kit available at your Brooklyn, NY, business can help you act quickly in case of an injury. While emergencies are often unpredictable, being prepared may give you peace of mind that you can handle them if they should arise.

Does Your Insurance Cover Mold

5/13/2018 (Permalink)

Cleaning your car frequently to ensure mold and mildew doesn't grow

If you’re wondering whether your insurance pays for mold remediation in Brooklyn, NY, the short answer, unfortunately, is probably not. Because every policy is different, you should always call your insurance provider with specific questions, but chances are slim mold is covered. That’s because homeowners insurance doesn’t cover most types of water damage likely to lead to a mold problem. If you have fungus growth due to any of the following, your insurance is very unlikely to cover it.

• Leaks due to a lack of maintenance
• High humidity
• Poor ventilation
• Condensation
• Water seepage due to poor drainage
• Flooding

If you have specifically purchased flood insurance, you may have mold coverage, but nothing is guaranteed. Check your policy or contact your provider for specifics.

What Is Mold Exclusion?

There are some types of water damage likely to be covered by homeowners insurance. A burst water pipe, for example, is almost always covered. You may also have coverage for your sump pump or a backed up sewer. Even if these types of water damage are covered by your policy, remediation for fungus growth may not be. Many insurance companies have started including an explicit ‘mold exclusion’ in their policies. These state outright that mold remediation will not be covered under any circumstances.

Even if your policy doesn’t include a mold exclusion, it may set a cap on how much it will pay for mold remediation. Alternatively, it may only pay for certain things, such as mold removal or mold testing.

What Can You Do?

As a homeowner, you have a few options for how to handle mold remediation in Brooklyn, NY. The best thing you can do is prevent fungus growth to begin with. There are a number of preventative steps you can take, including the following.

• Keep indoor humidity below 50%
• Do regular maintenance
• Landscape so groundwater drains away from house
• Keep rooms well ventilated

Some insurers also offer the option of paying more for mold insurance, however, the coverage may still be fairly limited. If you’re struggling with mold, talk to a claims adjuster or a SERVPRO representative to find out what your options are.

3 Quick Tips for Cleaning a Barbeque Grill

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

Cleaning your grill can prevent future fire damages

Few foods taste as good as those that have been cooked outdoors on a barbeque grill. From mouth-watering burgers to steaks and grilled veggies, there are dozens of meals to enjoy. However, one important aspect of becoming a grill master in Brooklyn, NY, is learning how to operate your barbeque safely, including using effective cleansing techniques. Proper grill cleaning may reduce the risk of fire or your need for a fire damage and restoration service, and there are several steps you can take to ensure your unit is always clean and ready to use.

1. Begin While the Grill Is Warm

Removing thick grease and baked-on residue can be difficult when the grill is cold, so cleaning the unit while it is still somewhat warm may make the job easier. Wait until you can touch the racks comfortably and then prepare for grill cleaning by gathering a pair of rubber gloves and a grill brush before filling a bucket with hot, soapy water large enough to immerse the grates.

2. Disconnect and Dismantle the Grill

Before you perform any grill maintenance, check to ensure all the dials are in the off position, then turn off and disconnect the propane tank. Remove the grates and the drip pan and place them in the bucket of soapy water to soak. Next, clean the underside of the grill’s hood to remove residue that can build up there and cause a grease fire. You can guard the heating elements from dripping water and grease by covering them with heavy-duty foil.

3. Rinse and Reassemble

Once you scrub out the inside of the grill, pull the drip pan and grates from the soak bucket, scrub and rinse them with a hose and place them back inside the unit. Remove the foil and wipe down the outer surface to finish the job.

Becoming the neighborhood grill master in Brooklyn, NY, includes understanding the importance of proper grill cleaning. When you put cleanliness first, your family, friends and neighbors can enjoy delicious barbeque meals safely.

2. Remove tight items. Part of burn first aid is knowing that this injury can cause areas to swell. If the injured person is wearing rings or a tight bracelet near the damaged skin, it may be beneficial to remove the objects before the swelling kicks in.

3. Avoid causing more damage. After fire damage at work, burn victims with minor injuries may be tempted to pop blisters. However, this skin actual acts as a protective layer against infection. If you want to avoid causing more damage, try to keep these blisters intact.

4. Protect the burn. Another major part of first aid is protecting the injured area. You can do this by applying antibiotic ointment, aloe vera lotion and bandages.

4/19/2018 (Permalink)

Ceiling Mold Damage

However, staining may be an indication of problems that could add up to major costs later. Tile mold and other stains caused by an abundance of moisture might be causing damage to your building’s ceiling. If You Want To Serve and Protect, Here’s What You Need To Know

4/13/2018 (Permalink)

Be prepared to serve and protect for any type of restoration emergency

A career as a first responder can be exciting, fulfilling and rewarding, but it can also be very dangerous. As a responder, you will be asked to enter buildings and spaces from which others flee. To protect yourself, and to maximize your ability to help others, there are some precautions that you can take beforehand:

• Get your immunizations.
• Invest in the proper gear.
• Brush up on safety hazards.
• Know protocol.

Vaccinations Are Essential

Individuals who work in flood response are required to get two vaccinations: tetanus and hepatitis B. However, because flood waters are so dirty, and because you have no idea what type of germs you will come into contact with as a first responder, you should also talk to your doctor about getting the hepatitis A, cholera, rabies, typhoid and meningococcal vaccines. Though the rate of exposure is low, it doesn’t hurt to give your immune system a little boost.

Invest in the Right Gear

Though your department should provide you with the right gear, it’s helpful to know which gear is absolutely necessary. Chemical-resistant outer clothing, protective eye gear, and plastic or rubber gloves and boots are necessary for keeping contaminants out and your body safe.

Know the Risks

What type of gear you wear also depends on the type of risk you’re dealing with. For instance, if you’re working in a moldy home, chemical-resistant outer clothing may not be necessary, but a face mask would be. Know the risks so that you can show up prepared.

Know Protocol

You cannot help others if you yourself aren’t sure what to do. Brush up on standard protocol, and make it a point to further your education every chance you get. Also, do not assume that because you’re a disaster responder that you are immune from danger yourself. If you experience nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, dizziness, extreme fatigue or other strange symptoms post-disaster, reach out to a medical professional ASAP.

Being a first responder in Brooklyn NY, can be very rewarding. To make it even more so, get your immunizations, invest in the right gear and understand protocol.

Insurance Coverage for Mold

3/29/2018 (Permalink)

Mold damage in Brooklyn, NY

The best way to protect your home from mold is to prevent fungus growth from occurring in the first place. That means keeping your home in good repair, maintaining proper ventilation and keeping indoor humidity under 60 percent. Unfortunately, mold may become an issue anyway, and if it does, you’ll need to pay a professional mold remediation service in Brooklyn, NY, to take care of it. Will your homeowners insurance cover it? The answer is: it depends.

As a rule, insurance policies exclude mold damage that results from:

• Structural leaks
• High humidity
• Poor drainage
• Water seepage
• Flooding

This covers nearly all of the most common causes of mold damage, so if you’re already dealing with a mold issue, your chances of being covered are low.

What Is Covered

Exactly what is covered will vary depending on your personal insurance policy. Many policies will cover damage resulting from a burst water pipe or a backed-up sewer, including fungus growth, but these may be the only instances in which you will be covered.

It’s also important to check your policy regularly to see if coverage has changed, as many companies are reducing their coverage for mold damage. They may put a cap on how much coverage you can receive for mold damage, which can be problematic if the mold growth is extensive. Some insurance companies explicitly deny coverage for mold no matter what the cause or may require that you pay extra for mold coverage.

What You Can Do

First, read your policy so you understand what is and is not covered by your policy. Talk to a public insurance adjuster or a mold cleanup representative about your situation to learn more about your options for getting coverage and filing a claim. If you live in Brooklyn, NY, where fungus growth is a common issue, it could be worthwhile to pay extra for mold insurance.

Helpful Hints About Toilet Replacement

3/21/2018 (Permalink)

Toilet Repaired in New York

A toilet is expected to be reliable, and they can last for 30 years or more. But sometimes the porcelain material they are cast in can develop a crack or the tank may break. When that occurs and water begins to escape, it is time to replace the leaking toilet. Here are a few tips to help you master the plumbing repair.

Preparation

After discovering the leak, there are a few steps to take before you can replace the toilet.

• Before beginning the project, purchase a wax ring gasket, water-supply tube, and toilet.
• There are different types of water a broken toilet can leak. If the toilet bowl itself is leaking, consider calling a professional cleanup crew to make sure the water is not contaminated and hasn’t seeped into your walls and flooring.
• Once the water is removed, allow the area to dry thoroughly.
• Remove all standing water from the toilet tank and toilet bowl.

Removal

Once the area is dry and disinfected, you are ready to remove the old toilet.

• Disconnect the water supply line from the toilet.
• Remove the bolts securing the toilet to the floor.
• Lift the cracked toilet away.
• Scrape the wax ring and check flange for cracks.

Replacement

Time to replace that leaking toilet with a new one.

• Center new wax gasket over the flange.
• Connect the water supply to the toilet base.
• Set the toilet in place over the wax gasket and press softly until the toilet meets the floor.
• Tighten bolts or hex nuts at toilet base.
• Connect water supply to wall shut-off valve.
• Sit on the toilet to compress further and re-tighten bolts.

Once the water is restored to the toilet, flush the unit several times. If water leaks between the toilet and floor, it probably means the wax ring was not properly seated or didn’t seal correctly. To correct the issue, consider installing a new ring to finish the toilet repair.

Don’t be intimidated by an old, cracked toilet. Sure, a leaking toilet can be exasperating in Park Slope, NY, but by following these easy steps, you can quickly replace your broken toilet with a new one.

7 Important Items To Have in Your Building’s First Aid Kit

3/16/2018 (Permalink)

From minor medical situations to serious emergencies, a first aid kit can be an important safety feature in your building in Brooklyn, NY. By knowing what to include in a kit, you can be better prepared to handle scary situations.

1. Bandages

A vital item you should have in an emergency kit can be bandages. Hemostatic gauze and rolled gauze tape can be used to help stop bleeding on bigger cuts, while smaller bandages can be used for minor scrapes. Liquid bandage can also be a useful way to seal wounds.

2. Ointments

A good antibacterial ointment, such as bacitracin, can help prevent wounds from getting infected. Injury-specific ointments, such as blister treatment or insect sting treatments can also be good additions to your kit.

3. Medications

While first-aid medications may not be permanent solutions to medical problems, they can help get the situation under control until proper help can be reached. Basic medications such as ibuprofen and anti-acid tablets can help alleviate pain. Injectable epinephrine can be a lifesaving treatment for an allergic reaction.

4. Splints

Splints can be a way to immobilize injured areas of a person’s body until professional medical attention is available. Basic splints, including finger splints, can come in handy in emergency situations.

5. Tools

Medications and bandages may not be worth much if you can’t use them. Proper tools such as scissors and tweezers can be some of the most important elements of your first aid kit.

6. Personal Care

Personal care items may not be the first thing you think of when creating an emergency kit, but they can come in handy. These items can include:

• Eyedrops
• Lotion
• Sunscreen
• Chapstick

7. Emergency Supplies

Since first aid kits may be used during power outages, natural disasters and other serious situations, it can be helpful to include emergency supplies such as flashlights and duct tape.

By including these items in a first aid kit you should be prepared to handle almost any minor medical situation. After first aid has been administered, get injured or sick employees to the proper, professional care as soon as possible.

How do you know if you have mold?

2/28/2018 (Permalink)

One of the most telltale signs of mold damage anywhere is a smelly odor.

It’s unpleasant by itself, but this kind of smelly odor takes on a very musty scent. Anyone who notices a smelly odor like this at home or at work should go ahead with deodorization to make the smell more pleasant, but the smelly odor can’t be ignored with the constant use of deodorization. It’s a sign professional help is needed. Deodorization isn’t something that can be used for purposes other than to cover up the smell. It’s not going to get rid of the problem. Homeowners often forget that deodorization doesn’t get rid of mold or other mildew. It only covers it up and allows people to live a bit more comfortably while they ignore the real problem.

Smelly odor, mildew, fungus, and any high levels of humidity combined with a leak anywhere is a sign it’s time to get a remediation company into the home or office to handle what’s going on with everything. It’s never a good idea to ignore these signs.

A Water Damage Restoration Company performs a myriad of services.

They provide invaluable help by mitigating the damage of flood water in your home. When contacted, they will immediately assess the situation for safety concerns. Whether it's electrical lines down, or unsteady piles of personal items, creating a safe environment is the first step in mitigating the flood damage. Using commercial-grade pumps, fans, vacuums, and other equipment, water and debris are removed quickly and completely. Specialized equipment for drying, such as industrial fans and dehumidifiers are brought in to remove as much moisture as possible. Keep Your Fire Sprinklers Ready for Action

2/21/2018 (Permalink)

Water-based fire protection systems, or fire sprinklers, should always be kept in working condition and tested periodically to ensure maximum fire suppression capacity. Your sprinklers are your home or business’s first line of defense in the event of a fire, and it may be mandatory in Williamsburg, NY, to conduct routine tests and inspections.

1. Check the age of your sprinkler system. Modern standards require that sprinkler systems adhere to NFPA 25 requirements, but systems in buildings older than 60 years may be outdated and in need of a full replacement.

2. Check your sprinkler installation. Faulty or defective installation equipment and procedures can lead to sprinkler malfunctions in the event of a fire.

3. Always keep your fire sprinklers clean. Dirty fire sprinklers can lead to obstructions that block the water flow and prevent sprinklers from working correctly, or even from detecting and activating in the event of a fire. Many organizations and inspectors recommend an obstruction inspection every five years.

4. Periodically test your sprinkler functions. Sprinklers can be tested in a variety of ways, including simply testing that they work through routine checks. However, more complex testing such as corrosion testing and hydrostatic testing can uncover additional issues that may not be readily apparent on a simple functional test.

5. Immediately replace defective parts. Because sprinklers are so deeply interconnected, replacing a defective part may require replacing larger sections of the sprinkler system. However, this is highly advisable as a matter of safety to prevent any issues should the sprinklers fail to activate in the event of smoke or fire.

One benefit of fire sprinklers is that fire sprinkler cleanup is usually much less messy than cleanup after fire suppression using stronger means. Sprinklers can make a serious difference in prevention of property losses and safety issues, and should be maintained at all times.

5 Tips for Avoiding Candle Fires

2/15/2018 (Permalink)

Many homeowners light candles to freshen up a room or to have lighting during a power outage. However, candles still have the potential to create a fire that spreads throughout the building. Avoid a candle fire at all costs, and follow these helpful tips to stay safe.

1. Do Not Leave Candles Unattended

If you are leaving a room with a candle in it, first extinguish the flame. After all, you can always relight a candle if you desire.

2. Keep the Area Around Candles Clean

The shelf or stand where you place the candle should not have anything flammable on it. Additionally, you should avoid placing a candle on a nightstand near your bed. The bedding may catch fire if you are not careful.

3. Toss It Once It Is Less Than Two Inches Tall

You do not want to risk a candle fire by allowing the flame to get too close to the base of the candle. It is better to simply throw away a candle once it is less than two inches high. They are relatively inexpensive to replace.

4. Keep Candles Away From Pets and Children

Candles should be placed high enough that kids and animals cannot get them. It is dangerous for children to play with anything lit. If the candle is left on a coffee table, then a dog’s tail may accidentally hit it and cause it to fall onto the floor.

5. Do Not Put Out a Candle With Water

It is preferable to put out a flame by blowing on it rather than pouring water. The reason is that water can cause the wax to spill all over the place. The hot wax may still catch fire, causing flames to spread throughout a home in Brooklyn NY. Candles are meant to be enjoyed, so always follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions to avoid a nasty candle fire and the impending smoke cleanup.

Why It’s Imperative To Clean the Breakroom Fridge on a Weekly Basis

2/9/2018 (Permalink)

Take a look in your breakroom fridge and make note of what you see. Do you see nice, clean and organized shelves of food, or do you see bags of forgotten food, rotten fruit, spills and stains, and maybe even a growing patch of fridge mold? Chances are, it’s the latter. Office refrigerators hardly (if ever) get cleaned, which may be why so many come with that telltale mold smell. NBC News ran a report about the dangers of an unsanitary fridge.

That said, while disinfecting the fridge should be a weekly chore, there are better and worse ways of going about the process. If you want to clean up your breakroom fridge, here are a few tips from your Greenpoint, NY, mold remediation team:

• Be mindful of expiration dates, and if something looks funky, toss it.
• However, always ask before discarding anything, otherwise you risk having a lawsuit brought against you for throwing away someone's personal property.
• Wipe up spills to prevent fridge mold, and always make sure the caps are securely fastened to their bottles to help prevent future spills.
• Make cleaning out the office refrigerator and disinfecting it a weekly chore.

To make the last one fair for everyone, devise a cleaning schedule. This way the same person isn’t responsible for cleaning up after everyone else each week. Also, ask each co-worker to go through the fridge every Friday and throw out any leftover items of theirs that have gone bad. If some items are still good, such as bottles of mustard or jars of jelly, ask them to wipe down the containers with a warm cloth and place them back in a designated spot in the fridge.

Office refrigerators can be pretty gross, but with five minutes of everyone’s time at the end of each week, your breakroom fridge can be a clean and healthy place to stow your food. Best of all, it can be free of that dreaded fridge mold.

Why a Flood Cut Is Worth It After a Storm

1/19/2018 (Permalink)

When a storm hits in Brooklyn, NY, flooding is many homeowners’ biggest fear. However, while contamination from standing water is a serious danger, water damage and contaminates left after the flooding recedes can not only cause health concerns but issues with your home’s insulation. A flood cut, or removal of the drywall from the floor to 12 inches above the flood line in a room affected by flooding, can ensure that your walls dry completely and don’t harbor mold or other health hazards. Additionally, a tear out of the drywall can reveal further water damage that must be repaired.

Not all cases require a flood cut. When the flooding only involves clean water, as from a broken pipe, and if there is no insulation in the wall, a flood cut may not be necessary. Flood cuts are typically used in the following situations:

• If flooding is due to a storm or sewage backup and the flood water may be contaminated
• If wet insulation is detected
• If microbial growth of any kind is detected

Flood Cuts Keep You and Your Family Healthy

When flood water is contaminated, it can foster the growth of mold and other bacteria harmful to your health. Because flood waters can seep through drywall, health hazards can be hidden in the walls even if the room looks dry and clean on the surface. A flood cut ensures that walls are thoroughly dried and free from growth, keeping you and your family safe.

Flood Cuts Reveal Hidden Damage

While not all walls are insulated, flooded homes with insulation need flood cuts to reveal water damage behind the drywall. Drywall tear out can reveal whether insulation has been damaged by the flood. Because insulation cannot be properly dried after a flood and maintain its R-value, any wet insulation must be replaced.

When your home floods in Brooklyn, NY,  professional water restoration experts can ensure that you and your family stay healthy and your home stays insulated.

• Keeping pipes from freezing
• Checking pipes regularly
• Turning off water while on vacation

Act Fast When Things Go Wrong

Identify What’s Happening

There are several things to be identified when flooding occurs. What To Know About Category 3 Water Damage

1/19/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage comes at different levels. Category 3 water damage is the highest possible. Sewage and river water are two examples of contaminated category 3 water. As far as categories go, category 1 is clean water. Category 2 is clean water that has sat for a short time or water that has some chemicals in it. Category 3 contains bacteria and pathogens.

Keep in mind that after a few days of standing, most water is contaminated.

What Is Secondary Damage?

The bacteria and water can evaporate and remain in the home for some time if not taken care of properly. This is why it is important to have a specialist to make sure that all of the water and mold are gone.

What Can You Do?

Most people want to know what they can do about black water in their home. The first line of defense is calling a professional who has the proper equipment to handle this type of flood. Once you have someone to help you extract the water, you can focus on the cleanup process. It is important to get this done right away. The longer that black water sits, the more dangerous it can become to you and your family.

Category 3 water damage sounds more intimidating than it is. With the right defense, you can save yourself the headache and expense of secondary damage caused by Williamsburg, NY, flood water. With any flood, you do not want to take on category 3 damage on your own.

Four Common Mold Questions

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

Four Common Mold Questions

While mold growth can be a common worry for any home or business owner, having a better understanding of mold can make you realize that it is not as mysterious or dangerous as you thought. Remember that mold only grows in the presence of moisture or high humidity, so you may have water damage as well as mold. If your building suffers from either or both, contact a restoration company in Brooklyn, New York.

1. Is Mold Dangerous?

Most types of mold are not dangerous. Mold is not directly toxic or poisonous, but some types of mold give off toxic spores.

2. Why Does Mold Grow?

Mold growth can only occur in high levels of moisture. If you see mold growing, it means there is a cause of high humidity, usually a broken pipe. Additionally, a recent flood or simply the weather may be the cause. On the other hand, if you find a broken pipe or notice high levels of moisture, you should also be on the lookout for mold.

3. How is Mold Removed?

The process of removing mold is reliable. First, the source of moisture must be identified and fixed. Then the area is contained and affected material is removed. The mold is cleaned, disinfected, and completely eradicated. Then the area is dried and any materials that can be returned are brought back. A final check ensures that the mold is gone and the moisture problem is no more.

4. Am I at Risk of Water Damage?

If you have noticed some mold growth, there is a good chance damage caused by water may have also occurred. This is especially common if the mold is caused by a broken or leaking pipe. Mold restoration should always be accompanied by investigation for other types of damage. Visit http://www.SERVPROnorthwestbrooklyn.com for more information on mold.

Three Ways to Prevent Storm Damage

11/4/2017 (Permalink)

Three Ways to Prevent Storm Damage

Are you worried about river flooding, hail damage, or hurricane damage? Do you live in an area with lots of river flooding, hail damage, ground water, and ice damming? Are you worried that your home could experience storm damage, hail damage, hurricane damage, ice damage, or roof damage? Are you wondering how you can prevent storm damage to your home, including wind damage, roof damage, and hail damage?

Unfortunately, any home can experience ice damage, frozen pipes, an ice dam, flooding, and river flooding. No matter where you live, you may be susceptible to major ice damage, frozen pipes, ice damming, or hurricane damage that requires a flood pump, roof repair, or other storm restoration. Although no homeowner can predict river flooding, ice damage, hurricane damage, flood water, or ground water, there are several things any homeowner can do to minimize the need for storm remediation. When you're ready to start preventing storm damage, including wind damage and roof damage, there are three things you can do.

First off, make sure your house is in good shape prior to river flooding or other storms. If you already have wind damage, roof damage, or ice damming on your home, your house is more likely to experience wind damage, frozen pipes, and ice damming. It's important that you seek home restoration or water restoration options prior to a storm arriving. Any storm, regardless of its strength, can impact your house and cause flooding or even a roof leak that needs a roof repair. Understand that preparing your house is an important step in preventing the need for storm remediation. Make sure you have a roof repair and any needed storm restoration prior to a storm occurring.

Next, always make sure you remove standing items from your yard. During periods of high wind, some items could become airborne. While this won't cause frozen pipes, if a flying object causes a roof leak, you could need a roof repair. It's important to take as many steps as possible to reduce your risk of a roof leak. Make sure you remove any objects, such as toys or trash cans, from your yard when you suspect you may have flooding, flood water, or ground water. While removing items won't prevent flooding, keeping them safely indoors will prevent losing items due to flooding.

Finally, make sure you seek fast repairs after a storm has occurred. If you notice ground water, flood water, a roof leak, or another problem that might require a flood pump for water restoration, make sure you seek storm remediation. Although seeking home restoration or water restoration assistance might seem time-consuming, the truth is that it's important to seek home restoration and water restoration as soon as possible, especially if you have flood water or an ice dam. An ice dam is nothing to mess with, as an ice dam could cause severe roof damage. Similarly, you don't want to put off storm restoration if you have standing water that needs a flood pump to perform home restoration or storm remediation. Storm restoration should include utilizing a flood pump to remove excess water from your home. Maintaining your home and restoring it will ensure that future storm damage is minimized, but it will also ensure you don't develop secondary issues after a storm, such as a weakened structure or foundation.

Although dealing with storms and problems can be tricky, the truth is that it's important to prepare as much as possible before a storm arrives. This will minimize the damage to your home and ensure that clean-up is simple and as minimally invasive as possible. What to Do When You Suffer Storm Damage

9/22/2017 (Permalink)

What to Do When You Suffer Storm Damage

Water is the world's most powerful force, and while most people just focus on the wind when they think about a hurricane, flooding is almost always the bigger issue. In places around the world where storm damage has happened, river flooding, ground water problems and other subsequent issues have led to roof damage, roof leaks and other similar concerns. When you find yourself inundated with flood water and hurricane damage, what should you do? Whether it's hail damage, ice damage, wind damage or damage to your flood pump, it's important to have a plan. Here's where to start with storm remediation.

Put in a call to FEMA

Perhaps the first step when you've suffered storm damage is to put in a call to FEMA. Whether river flooding filled your house or you suffered a roof leak from wind damage, a call to FEMA is the first step in storm remediation. FEMA is a federal agency set up to help people deal with storm restoration, home restoration and other types of storm remediation. If you've taken a direct hit and are suffering from hurricane damage, FEMA can sometimes provide you with money to use in the storm remediation. You'll have to get a FEMA number to get the process started.

Gather and protect your personal information for insurance and other claims

If you've been the victim of flooding, wind damage, roof damage, roof leaks and other problems, you may be able to file an insurance claim that will provide you with the money to hire a professional to fix your home. Ground water and flood water can be dangerous, so it's critical to get the process started early. Even if you're the victim of a winter storm and you have frozen pipes from ice damage along with hail damage, you should still gather your information for insurance purposes. The home restoration process from a problem with ice damming or wind damage is largely the same. It should start with the successful protection of your most important documents so you'll have what you need when you go to file an insurance claim to cover that roof repair.

Get out of a damaged house as quickly as possible

Whether an ice dam has busted of you need storm restoration because of wind damage, it's critical not to spend time in a damaged home. Those homes suffering from ice damage or ice damming problems can have structural issues and be unsafe. If you don't have ice damage and you instead have river flooding, you may be living in a veritable cesspool. Your safety should be most important, so it pays to get out before you start the process of a complete home restoration or water restoration. After you've gotten out, you can find a professional company to provide storm damage help, including roof repair for a roof leak, water pump action for flooding, and full home restoration for ground water problems.

Call a company to provide professional help

You might think you know how to deal with flooding or roof damage on your own, but it's unlikely you do. Water restoration in your home is easiest with an expensive flood pump, and frozen pipes from an ice dam issue shouldn't be handled by an amateur. If you find yourself fixing frozen pipes because of ice damming, you are doing it wrong. The better option to rid yourself of flood water or handle that roof repair is to invest in professional help. If it's hurricane damage that's brought that river flooding into your home, then you'll likely have a long road ahead of you. The flood water and ground water problems can do significant damage to the bones of your home, and a professional water restoration company may have to fix your home over the long haul. Even if it's just hail damage or ice damage from ice damming problems, you should have an insurance payoff to help you get professional help into your home. Take advantage of that and save yourself the trouble.

If it's storm restoration you're after, get your affairs in order and call a professional storm restoration company with skilled people and a real flood pump. If it's something like roof damage or other structural storm damage, allow a professional to do that roof repair or fix problems from an ice dam. Frozen pipes and water restoration from hurricane damage are nothing to play around with. A professional who has dealt with ice dam issues or hail damage before can walk you through a stressful time. Their flood pump may just accelerate the process, too, if you have extensive water in your home.

Why You Shouldn't DIY Mold Removal

Why You Shouldn't DIY Mold Removal

Dry rot, mildew, and fungus are all common. Many home and business owners notice them regularly at home or at work, but does that mean they always indicate mold damage or mold growth? Mold in the home and commercial mold damage happen all the time in every part of the country. Mold is a type of fungus that needs nothing more than just a little moisture and high levels of humidity to grow rapidly and spread quickly, and that causes problems at home or work. Mold growth is nothing to take lightly, and it’s not always what it seems.

Could Mold in the Home or Commercial Mold Damage Be A Problem for Me?

Mold in the home and commercial mold damage are both entirely possible for anyone. If there is any water damage of any kind in a home or office, mold growth can occur. One of the biggest causes of mold damage in a home or office is mold growth behind the walls. It happens when water damage occurs and is not cleaned up in time for mold spores to find it and form. This can happen in a flood, it can happen when a small pipe in the walls has even a small leak, and it can happen when a pipe bursts.

This is why it’s so imperative water damage is cleaned up right away and properly. Mold growth behind walls forms quickly, and it can cause widespread damage because it’s not easily noticeable. Mold growth behind walls can cause serious mold in the home and commercial mold damage if it’s not caught in time. How do people find mold growth behind the walls and clean it up before it causes too much mold in the home or commercial mold damage? They look for the signs.

The Signs of Mold Damage

- Dry rot
- Mildew in the home
- Fungus in the home
- High levels of humidity
- Smelly odor with a musty smell
- Deodorization methods don’t work to get rid of smelly odor

Most people don’t know these are the signs of mold in the home, commercial mold damage, and even mold growth behind walls. Dry rot is a common problem in many areas of the country, and that’s confusing to home and business owners. This is not to say dry rot at home or work means there’s mold growth, too, but it can mean it’s possible. The same is true of mildew. It’s not uncommon to find mildew around faucets and around the grout in bathrooms and showers.

It certainly doesn’t mean a home or business requires mold removal, remediation, or mitigation, but it does indication conditions are right for mold growth. Mildew also needs high humidity and moisture to grow because it’s just another fungus like mold. Humidity and moisture cause mold to grow fast and spread rapidly.

If mold growth behind walls is a problem, the most common sign is a smelly odor. It’s musty and difficult to eliminate even with deodorization. It requires the use of professional remediation and mitigation as well as the proper deodorization technique a restoration company uses regularly.

Is Mold Really that Bad?

Yes. Mold is that bad because it spreads quickly. It’s not all black mold that can cause further problems that home and business owners need to worry about. Black mold is not the only mold that needs a restoration company immediately. Black mold does need to be identified by a restoration company, and it certainly requires mitigation and remediation as well as mold removal services, but all mold is a problem. It takes a professional to thoroughly clean up mold damage as well as use professional deodorization to remove the smelly odor it leaves behind.

Mold removal is best handled by a restoration company. Home and business owners that want to help can turn off their HVAC system to prevent spreading mold spores to other rooms in a building faster and more efficiently. They can clean up water damage immediately, and they can leave mold alone so as not to disturb the spores. Mold damage such as black mold does require professional mold removal, remediation, and mitigation, but so does all mold damage.

The 5 Step Water Damage Restoration Process

7/25/2017 (Permalink)

The 5 Step Water Damage Restoration Process

Flood damage is one of the most expensive types of property damage in the United States. Each year, billions of dollars are spent on repairing damage do to pipe breaks, supply line breaks or natural sources of flooding. Thankfully, water damage is almost always containable. But it is absolutely imperative that a professional restoration company be called in to begin mitigation efforts, the second any water in the home or water in the business is seen. Left untreated, flood damage will quickly compromise the structure and its materials, leading to potentially massive property damage and even condemnation of the property.

The good news is that, in the United States, hundreds of years of indoor plumbing, living on rivers and lakes and experiencing some of the most severed weather in the world, have all conspired to create a water damage restoration industry that is the best in the world. Almost every town in America has at least one professional restoration company. It's crucial that if any flood damage occurs to a home or property, the local professional restoration company is called in as soon as possible. With a prompt response, flood damage can almost always be completely reversed. With a delay of more than 24 hours, however, the chance of a successful restoration begins dropping precipitously with every passing hour.

The first step in the water cleanup process is calling in a team of restoration and mitigation specialists to the flooded home or business. A professional mitigation team has access to heavy-duty, specialized equipment that is specifically designed to handle flooded homes or business. They also have the expertise and manpower to attack the situation, head on, completely removing all water from the property, typically within just a few hours of arrival. Remember, the sooner a call to the pros is made, the higher the chances of a successful mitigation of potential damage.

The next phase of the cleanup process begins the second the water cleanup team arrives. They will immediately enter the property, surveying the extent of the water in the home or water in the business. At this stage, they will locate the supply line break, pipe break or other failure. If the pipe break or supply line break is causing active leaking, the water cleanup team will shut off the source of any additional flooding. In some cases, the supply line break or pipe break may need to be welded off using heavy equipment, such as torch cutters and gas welders.

If there is standing water in the business or home, the team will begin its extraction. Using ultra-powerful pumps and special vacuum equipment, the team will be able to remove up to 2,000 gallons of water in the home or water in the business, per hour. Within one hour or less, all standing water in the flooded home or business will be completely evacuated.

Next, the cleanup team will begin the drying process. This will be carried out through the use of heavy-duty drying equipment, such as that seen in car washes, as well as giant and powerful dehumidifiers. The drying process is the longest stage of cleanup, usually taking between a few hours to a full day. Upon completion, the flooded home or business will no longer have any traces of uncontained water. This will mark the point at which the structure is no longer at risk of incurring further water damage.

Finally, the team will thoroughly clean every item and surface affected by the flood water. This is to prevent mildew and mold growth, as well as removing smells that inevitably come with materials being soaked.

What Are Some Resources to Contact After a Fire?

What Are Some Resources to Contact After a Fire?

An unexpected fire in a home or fire in a business can cause extensive fire damage that is impossible to deal with without additional help. Luckily, there are a number of resources for property owners who require fire damage restoration to contact in order to get the help they need. Fire cleanup is a lengthy and complication process which should not be tackled alone, especially when there are a number of organization that specialize in fire damage restoration.

Financial considerations are usually the first thought to come to a property owner's mind after a fire in a home or a fire in a business. Commercial fire damage can be absolutely devastating to a small business. After the fire has been stabilized by the fire department, the first organization to contact should be the insurance company. Insurance can sometimes cover the costs involved in hiring a restoration company, which can ease the transition back to normalcy after all the soot damage, smoke damage, and fire damage has been dealt with.

After the coverage of a restoration company's services is discussed, a fire cleanup team should be scheduled. A professional from the restoration company will evaluate the extent of the fire damage caused by the fire in a home or the fire in a business. The costs of repair and replacement will be discussed, and all commercial fire damage will be recorded and itemized. The fire cleanup team will also collaborate with the local fire department to discuss safety concerns and any damage to the building's structural integrity.

If walls or roofs are compromised, temporary walls and roofs may be put up by the fire damage restoration team. Windows and doors are usually boarded up to prevent unwarranted access to the premises. This boarding up of entry points allows for the property owner to rest assured that his or her property is safe while fire damage restoration is still under way. Because commercial fire damage can often damage locks, boarding up the doors is generally a good idea.

Once the building is secured, it is essential that all personal belongings damaged or not be organized and itemized. Soot damage and smoke damage may render some items unsalvageable. These items are then disposed of by the fire cleanup crew using regulated heavy machinery. The soot damage and smoke damage that is present is also evaluated for sanitization and possible restoration.

Smoke smells can be removed from fabrics and other surfaces using a variety of techniques including heavy vacuuming, steam injection, ozone treatment, thermal fogging, ventilation, and others. The smoke smell may persist and require multiple treatments before it is completely gone. Some individuals believe that ventilation alone can reduce smoke smells, but it sometimes requires treatments with chemicals called counteractants.

Because water is used extensively by the fire department to put out fires, water damage containment is also necessary. A fire in a home or a fire in a business can often result in extensive water damage and mold growth. Therefore, a specialist who can dry out the property and prevent further damage is necessary and usually contracted by the restoration company.

Fire damage can cause the loss of important paperwork like passports, driver's licenses, marriage certificates, birth certificates, insurance policies, and medical records. It is important to contact the authorities managing these documents immediately to have them replaced.

The fire department will also need to be in contact with the property owner to maintain the safety of the premises. Smoke damage and soot damage can sometimes cause a property to be dangerous. The smoke smell may be cause for the fire department to investigate further. Commercial fire damage is examined particularly deeply.

Once a property is boarded up and inaccessible to the property owner, resources like the American Red Cross, FEMA, and the Salvation Army can help with the transition period where they may need a place to stay. Visit http://www.SERVPROnorthwestbrooklyn.com for more information on fire damage.

If you disturb the spores, they can fly around your home and spread quickly, causing severe mold damage.

Safety precautions

The experts must be careful during the commercial mold damage removal. There is a risk of spreading the mold in home walls if you do not seal off the working zone. Commercial mold damage elimination calls for a restoration company that can prevent the spread by taking the necessary safety precautions during the exercise. While the fungus and mildew have a smelly odor, deodorization is not always advisable. The mold in home surfaces can cause a smelly odor. While you can rely on deodorization to get rid of the smelly odor, it is not a lasting solution. The removal of mildew, fungus, and mold in home floors can be a daunting task if you do not have the necessary expertise.

Avoid DIY

Whether you are grappling with black mold, dry rot, or mold growth behind wall, you should not attempt the project alone. The dry rot can cause the spores to move to various parts of the house and land on your furnishings, walls, and floors. The mold growth behind wall can be quite difficult to handle if you do not know the extent of the black mold development. If you want to control the dry rot and prevent the mold growth in the future, you must undertake a thorough inspection. Since you do not want to expose your family to the black mold, a restoration company will handle the operation in a professionally.

Remediation

Besides taking the right measures during the remediation process, mitigation is also vital. Since the fungus and mildew develop under damp conditions, preventing the possibility of flood damage is a great remedy against mold growth. Mold remediation and mitigation involve removing the visible fungus and mildew. However, the elimination of mildew and fungus is not sufficient to prevent the mold growth. It is vital to engage a commercial mold damage specialist to come up with the bespoke mold remediation and mitigation plans for your home.

Signs of mold growth

The smelly odor can signify that there is considerable mold growth behind wall. However, you need a restoration company to handle the problem on your behalf. Since the black mold can be toxic, you should be careful. Instead of deodorization, the specialists will get rid of the dry rot by taking some rigorous measures without compromising your health. While vinegar and bleach can prevent the minor mold growth, they fall short when it comes to handling the mold in home walls. Since deodorization cannot prevent the mold damage, you need help from a restoration company if you want to curb the mold growth behind wall. When it comes to mold development, the wet areas are the usual suspects. Check out for mold growth in the bathrooms and kitchens if you want to nip the problem in the bud.

Tips for Choosing the Right Water Damage Restoration Company

7/3/2017 (Permalink)

Tips for Choosing the Right Water Damage Restoration Company

Broken sewerage systems, plumbing technicalities, and floods can cause serious water damage to a home or a commercial building. As a homeowner or a manager of a commercial building, it's prudent to consider hiring the services of professional water damage remediation services to prevent the damage from escalating and causing even further damages like mold buildup or collapsing of the entire building. Furthermore, such damages can cause problems to your wiring system and affect other expensive appliances like the air conditioning unit. Time is crucial when it comes to responding to flood damage. If the flood damage is not resolved as soon as possible it might lead to other substantial losses that will definitely be too costly to replace or repair. The only ideal step to take is to hire a professional water cleanup service provider to restore the mess. Here are a few tips and guidelines on how to choose the best professionals for the job.

Certifications and accreditation

Although the mitigation process is supposed to commence as soon as possible, it doesn't mean that due diligence shouldn't be followed. Don't just hire anyone who claims to be certified and experienced in offering flood damage restoration services in the neighborhood without verifying the certifications and accreditation. In fact, a credible water cleanup contractor should have specializations in other fields such as plumbing and wiring so as to disconnect and connect broken pipes to restore the water damage satisfactorily. The contractor should have accreditation documents from relevant bodies like the Better Business Bureau.

Years of experience in the mitigation

Hire experienced professionals who have handled water damage mitigation situations that are even worse than the current flood damage problem. Experienced professionals have a good reputation. A good start is to ask friends and close family members for referrals of some of the reputable water damage restoration professionals in the neighborhood who can handle comprehensive drying.

Proximity

Remember, proximity is an issue here, therefore don't hire contractors who will take several days to get to your home when it has started developing mold. Mold and fungus can start developing on the site after two days. If the home or commercial building gets a mold manifestation, it may require that the building owner hires a mold removal company on top of the water damage restoration expenses. Some valuable possessions and furniture can get damaged if not salvaged in good time. Therefore, hiring professional contractors from the locality is a good idea.

Insured and bonded

To avoid unnecessary lawsuits in case of any unexpected eventualities during the water in a home or water in a business drying process, it's advisable to hire insured and bonded water in home or water in business removal companies. The water mitigation company should be bonded and licensed and comply with all policies regarding professional operation of a mitigation company.

Tools and equipment

The tools and modern equipment used by the water cleanup companies in removing the water in home or water in business are designed to be more effective than equipment sold for home use. Most businesses or homes can't afford to buy the expensive drying equipment necessary for the drying of the water for personal use. It's necessary to inquire about the type of equipment that the water in home or water in business Restoration Company will use in the water cleanup before signing any contract papers. Sometimes usage of certain equipment is prohibited in some residential estates.

The water removal company professionals should also wear protective gear such as gloves and masks when handling contaminated water from broken sewerage systems so as to avoid cross contamination. Ask the residential or commercial water Restoration Company to recommend any necessary repairs that should be conducted on the building after the restoration project.

Why Mold Damages at Home Requires Professional Help

7/3/2017 (Permalink)

Finding mold in the home or commercial mold damage causes a lot of confusion.

It’s easy to see professional mold removal services are required if the mold damage is severe, but it’s easy to think it’s something that can be handled at home with DIY methods when only a little mildew or fungus is apparent. It’s not easy to know which route to take when mold in the home or commercial mold damage is evident, but it’s always a wise idea to go with professional mold removal, remediation, and mitigation. This is the way to ensure mold damage, mildew, and any other fungus is killed, removed, and handled accordingly.

Mold Removal Benefits

Professional mold removal companies use upgraded equipment. This means they can get into smaller spaces to handle mold damage that’s not easily accessible for a homeowner or a business owner to get to without the same equipment. It’s not always simple to handle this kind of remediation without a mitigation service, which is why professional help is required.

The other obvious benefit of professional remediation and mitigation includes finding the source of mold damage. Mold in the home and commercial mold damage both start somewhere, and many people might not realize they need to find the source. It’s common to just clean it up when mold in the home or commercial mold damage become a problem, and few people consider tracing the source.

It’s usually the result of a leak or other water damage somewhere in the home or in the office. Professionals trace the problem and find out where it’s gone so they have a chance to figure out how to stop the flow of water into the house or the office to prevent more mold from occurring.

Learning to Prevent Mold

Mitigation is the action of reducing the severity, seriousness, or negative consequences of something. Experience in mold mitigation results in professionals learning how to prevent mold damage in the future. It’s better to keep it from forming than it is to fight it when it does occur, which is why so many people prefer to handle it this way. When mildew or fungus is present in a home, it’s a good indication there might be mold elsewhere. Mold is fungus and it grows in the same conditions as mildew. Damp, hot, and humid is that it takes for mold to grow. Knowing this allows homeowners to gain control of mold in the home or commercial mold damage.

Flood Safety Awareness

11/21/2016 (Permalink)

Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the United States.

Flooding can occur during any season, but some areas of the country are at greater risk at certain times of the year. Coastal areas are at greater risk for flooding during hurricane season (i.e., June to November).  Flooding can occur in several ways, including the following.

  • Excessive rain or snowmelt cannot be fully absorbed into the ground.
  • Waterways are blocked with debris or ice and overflow.
  • Water containment systems break, such as water or sewer systems.
  • Strong winds from tropical storms or hurricanes cause a storm surge by pushing seawater onto land. The speed and duration of flooding can vary significantly.

EVACUATION

To avoid being trapped when floodwaters threaten your area, the best action to protect yourself and your family is to evacuate before flooding starts. Know and follow the directions from local officials for community evacuation or seek high ground for localized flooding. If you do not evacuate before the flooding occurs or you are trapped by flash flooding, do not enter flooded areas or moving water either on foot or in a vehicle, including areas that appear to have only inches of water. Protecting yourself today means having sources for information, preparing your home or workplace, developing an emergency communications plan, and knowing what to do when a flood is approaching your home or business. Taking action today can save lives and property. Know your flood risk.  Move costly possessions and important documents – shift valuables and electrical goods off the floor for their own protection, ideally upstairs. SERVPRO of NORTHWEST BROOKLYN recommends the following steps to protect you, your family, and your home.

  • Protect furnishing – Small pieces of furniture, rugs, and draperies can be moved upstairs if flooding looks likely.
  • Stock up on sandbags – Use sandbags to block doorways, as these will help you fight the flooding and protect your home.
  • Protect Irreplaceables – Items of sentimental value, such as photos, should be packed in waterproof containers or bags and put somewhere safe, ideally upstairs. No amount of insurance money can bring these back, so put them out of harm’s way.
  • List important contacts – write down important numbers such as your home insurance provider and policy number.
  • Keep informed – Watch the weather forecast to keep up-to-date on any threats

SERVPRO of NW BROOKLYN is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  Whether you need emergency flood damage restoration or top-to-bottom home cleaning, you can trust us to make your house feel like home again. We have the training, experience, and equipment to quickly get your home looking its best.

Brooklyn, New York Smoke and Soot Clean Up

10/17/2016 (Permalink)

A fire in a Brooklyn home, caused by an old extension cord being used with a portable heater.

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor.  Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

SMOKE AND SOOT FACTS:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke - wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire.  Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Northwest Brooklyn will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.  The cleaning procedures will then be based on thee information identified during the pretesting.  Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke - Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary.  Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke - Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperature, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue - Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire.

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
